Chapter 48 Expecting

“Is there something on my face?” Charles asked, the corners of his lips slightly raised, his deep eyes betraying no emotion.
Florence snapped back to reality and immediately denied it with a smile. “Mr. Foster, you misunderstand. I was just thinking about something.”
Charles‘ smile widened. “Something to do with me, perhaps?”
“I’m not sure yet.”
Florence didn’t specify what it was, nor did she deny it.
“If you have any questions, just ask,” Charles told her. “I’ll answer truthfully.”
Florence nodded, her eyes fixed on Charles‘. “And when that time comes, I hope Mr. Foster will be honest with me.”
After a bit more conversation, Charles carried Florence’s suitcase to her room, and she agreed to join them for dinner.
As they headed downstairs to the restaurant, they saw the hotel staff leading a doctor with a medical bag inside.
Tyler, who was beside them, asked Florence, “Aren’t you going to check on that woman? What if she wakes up and badmouths you to Albert?”

Florence let out a sneer. “She never fainted in the first place, so how can she wake up? If Albert believes her, even if I’m there, he won’t believe me. Why should I go and subject myself to that?”
Tyler was taken aback.
Charles looked at Florence in silence for a moment before slowly saying, “If you need any help, just ask.”
It was a simple sentence, but it seemed to carry a hint of concern, warming Florence’s heart inexplicably.
“Well, if it comes down to it, I won’t hesitate to ask Mr. Foster for help,” she said playfully.
Charles gazed into her sly, beautiful eyes, their depths sparkling like tiny stars, brilliant and dazzling.
His usually icy face softened like the melting snow of early spring. “Good to know.”
Even though he’d seen it before, Tyler couldn’t help but shoot Charles a curious glance.
It was the first time Charles had ever shown such an expression to another woman.
He couldn’t help but think that after Florence and Albert’s divorce, it wouldn’t be long before he’d be attending Charles‘

wedding.
He’d have to give him a huge wedding gift.

After dinner, Florence and the others entered the elevator, ready to head back to their rooms for some rest. The hotel manager
followed them in.
“Mrs. Morris.” The hotel manager greeted Florence respectfully as soon as he saw her.
Florence nodded. Seeing the floor number he pressed, she casually asked, “Looking for Albert?”
The hotel manager didn’t hide anything from Florence. “Yes, Mrs. Morris. The forensic team has finished the examination, and I wanted to inform Mr. Morris of the results.”
Florence fell silent for two seconds, resisting the urge to look back at Charles. She then said to the hotel manager, “Albert is busy right now. You can just tell me.”
Just then, her floor arrived. She stepped out of the elevator with the hotel manager.
“See you later, Mr. Foster.”
Florence waved to Charles from the elevator entrance. She had a feeling she might see him again soon.

Charles gave her a faint smile and said directly, “See you later.”
The smile on Florence’s face stiffened slightly, but before she could ask Charles what he meant, the elevator doors had already
closed.
“You’re not really going to tell Florence the truth, are you?” Tyler asked Charles, frowning, in the elevator.
“Yeah, I said I would tell her if she asked,” Charles admitted readily.
Tyler didn’t ask any more questions.
Meanwhile, in the living room of Florence’s hotel room, the hotel manager was explaining the forensic pathologist’s autopsy report to Florence.
“The woman did die of poisoning, but not from food poisoning. She ingested a colorless, odorless toxin that caused organ failure within two hours. This poison isn’t available domestically; it’s only found on the black market overseas.
“The medical examiner said that, as of now, the police investigation has revealed that the woman was living in Derman. Her occupation is unknown, and they haven’t determined if she has any family. Further investigation is needed to gather more details. That’s all they’ve been able to find out so far.”
Florence felt a growing certainty that the woman’s death was

somehow connected to Charles.

She had heard that Charles faced numerous threats on his path to the presidency. She even recalled an incident when they were both at a project site and were targeted by an assassin.
With this in mind, she looked up at the hotel manager and said, “I need to see the surveillance footage from the hallway outside the woman’s room from last night until noon today.”
She wanted to confirm whether Charles had entered the
woman’s room.
The hotel manager looked at Florence with a troubled
expression. “Mrs. Morris, the surveillance system malfunctioned from last night until this afternoon. The footage isn’t available. It was only repaired this afternoon.”
Florence didn’t dwell on the missing footage. She dismissed the hotel manager and headed upstairs to Charles‘ room.
She had barely pressed the doorbell when the door swung open.
“It seems Mr. Foster was expecting me.”
Looking at the man before her, handsome as a Greek god, Florence offered a faint smile.
