Chapter 22 Assassination
Charles grabbed Hannah’s hand and sharply flung it away, his gaze as cold as ice. “If you dare touch Florence, I’ll make sure your family stock drops by 60% in three days.”
His presence was so overwhelming that no one could ignore it. Hannah’s heart skipped a beat as she realized who was standing in front of her.
“No wonder this bitch’s attitude is getting worse. She must’ve found an even bigger backer,” she thought, seething with rage.
Though furious, Hannah didn’t dare to cross Charles. She shot a venomous glare at Florence and stormed off with her friends.
Florence watched her leave, a satisfied smile spreading across
her face.
Charles glanced at her radiant expression, and for some reason, his own mood lifted as well.
After lunch, Charles and Florence headed to the mountains on the outskirts of the city.
No sooner had they arrived in the forest than Charles‘ phone rang. It was Tyler. “Buddy, did you forget about the meeting this afternoon? When are you going to show up?”
“You handle it. I’m not coming,” Charles answered briefly.

“What? You’re not coming? This is a multi–billion dollar deal…”
Tyler’s voice was cut off as Charles hung up the phone.
Florence, who had been standing nearby, overheard part of the conversation. “Mr. Foster, I think I heard something about at meeting. Are you supposed to be in one?”
Charles waved it off. “It’s nothing important.”
Florence didn’t ask further.
She pointed toward the forest with a mischievous smile. “For some reason, I get the feeling this place is a hidden gem. It could be more than just a theme park. There might be other ways to profit from it.”
Charles raised an eyebrow with a faint smile. “Sounds like you know something.”
“I’m not entirely sure, but I’ve heard rumors that there are diamonds hidden deep in these mountains. Who knows, they might really be here.”
The diamonds were buried deep underground, still
undiscovered, and while she couldn’t be certain, she knew sparking Charles‘ curiosity was the first step.
Charles raised an eyebrow, about to ask Florence where she had heard the information, when his eyes flickered to a tree. From behind it, he spotted someone aiming a gun at him.

He hadn’t expected them to track him all the way here.

“Mr. Foster, what are you looking at?” Florence noticed the sudden change in his expression and stepped closer, curious.
She didn’t realize that her back was directly in line with the gun’s sight. Charles‘ heart skipped a beat as he understood that the assassin wouldn’t hesitate to shoot, even if Florence was in the way. Sure enough, the killer’s eyes glinted with murderous intent, focused entirely on her.
Before Florence could react, Charles lunged forward, throwing himself on top of her and knocking her to the ground. A gunshot rang out, and the noise startled the birds, sending them scattering through the trees. For a moment, it felt like the sky had been covered by a dark cloud.
Florence’s mind went blank. She had no idea what was happening, only that Charles had already rolled with her on the ground, and she heard two more gunshots right by her ears.
At some point, Charles stood up and quickly moved her behind a tree for cover.
Florence’s eyes widened when she saw the blood dripping from Charles‘ arm.
“Your arm is bleeding!” she exclaimed, her voice shak She’d just narrowly escaped death.
If it hadn’t been for Charles, she knew it would’ve been her who was shot.

“It’s fine,” he said, though his face was pale. “I’m sorry for getting you caught up in this. Don’t worry. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
Before she could respond, another shot rang out, hitting the treet they were hiding behind.
Seeing the bullet hit the bark, Florence went pale.
Becoming the president wasn’t going to be easy for Charles. He still had two years before he could take office, and already his enemies were targeting him, resorting to assassination attempts.
Despite her fear, Florence couldn’t shake the feeling that Charles would make it through this. After all, she knew he would eventually become president.
But that didn’t mean she would make it out alive.
Just as she feared for her life, Charles pulled a gun from his waistband, and Florence felt a wave of relief.
She’d known it. He’d always be ready.
They exchanged fire with the assassin, and when the killer peeked out from behind the tree, Charles took the shot, hitting him square in the forehead. The assassin collapsed to the ground, dead.
Florence cautiously peeked out, curious to see the body, but Charles suddenly pulled her back, covering her eyes with his

hand. “Don’t look. His forehead and eyes are a mess. It’ll give you nightmares.”
His words, though dark, were delivered in a soft, comforting
tone.
Though Florence had been reborn, she had never seen someone die from a gunshot, and she understood why he didn’t want her hands to see. She nodded. “Okay, I won’t look. You can put your
down.”
Charles hesitated before letting go of her eyes, not wanting her to think he was being too forward.
“Your arm’s bleeding badly. You need to get it treated right. away.”
Florence, instead of worrying about the body, immediately focused on his injury.
She knew that earning Charles‘ trust could help her family’s business in the future.
Charles gave her a meaningful look, clearly moved by her
concern.
