Chapter 8
I saw Ethan again a month later.
He was skin and bones, his eyes sunken, still wearing a hospital gown. He looked exhausted and frail.]
The moment our eyes met, he immediately walked over, his voice shaking uncontrollably.
“Lily, can we… can we talk?”
I hesitated for two seconds, then nodded.]}]
Some things needed to be said.]
“What do you want to talk about?”
Ethan was silent for half a minute, then took a deep breath: “Sophie and I are completely over. The baby’s gone too, and she’ll never appear in front of us again. Lily, you know you’re the only one in my heart. Can you give me another chance?”
Hearing this news, surprise flashed in my eyes.[]
What happened? How did you lose the baby?“]
“You’re irreplaceable to me. I knew you minded about that baby, so I made it disappear. Lily, anything you don’t like, I can make disappear. Please forgive me, okay?“]
As he said this, he was incredibly excited, like he’d done something wonderful and was asking for praise.[]
Seeing his almost manic state, I was filled with shock and couldn’t help but take two steps back.]
“That was your own flesh and blood. How could you be so heartless? Sophie loved you so much–why would she agree to abort the baby?”
Seeing the fear that flashed across my face, Ethan frantically started explaining.
“No, I didn’t kill the baby. She fell down the stairs herself and miscarried. Lily, I was just an accident–it had nothing to do with me.‘
As Ethan said this, he was so nervous that the muscles in his face were twitching, and his eyes kept darting around.[]
My instincts told me there was more to this story.
“When did the miscarriage happen? She has no family or friends–why weren’t you there with her?”
Ethan stared at me intently, his mind completely focused on getting back together.
“A few days ago. I had someone save her and gave her a lot of money. She’ll be fine. I just wanted to come tell you the news right away. Lily, now that all the obstacles are gone, can we go back to how things were? Like nothing ever happened?“]]
I never imagined he could say something like this.[]
That was a living human being, and in his eyes, it was just an obstacle?
This face so close to mine looked exactly the same as before, but I felt like I was looking at a complete stranger.[]
I looked down and turned away.
“We can’t go back. Let’s end this on good terms. Don’t come looking for me anymore. I’m married now–I need to start my new life.“]}]
Those words hit Ethan like a laufe straight to the chest.[]
His body shook violently, darkness clouding his eyes, his voice raw with despair.[]
“Why? Why“]
“This should have ended long ago–that night I flew to Italy, it should have ended then. I told you before, I have a thing about cleanliness. This is where it stops, Ethan.”
Now
