Chapter 8
With Ethan’s help, things went smoothly.
The divorce papers were sent to Jack, and the
charges against Lily’s mother were filed.
The day after the papers were sent, I received a
call from Jack using another number.
His voice was agitated.
“Nora. how dare you block my number?”

“And why did Lily receive the lawsuit? Do you
think you can threaten us?”

I spoke calmly. “You’re overthinking it. I’m not
threatening you and your wife, I’m seeking
justice for my mother.”
“I’ve made it clear, I want a divorce!”
“Sign the papers, then you can fly away with
Lily.”
Jack’s breathing was heavy.
After a long pause, he trembled, “Nora, let’s not fight, okay?”
“I’ll come back tomorrow. This Sunday is our
fifth anniversary. Let’s celebrate it and your birthday together!”
I realized it was our anniversary.

く
It was the first time I forgot.
But it didn’t matter.
For the past four anniversaries, I’d made.
meticulous plans.
But I always ended up alone waiting at the
restaurant until closing time.
Lily always had some “emergency.”
Later, I called him to confront him.
He said, “Such a boring anniversary, forget
about it.”

Remembering this, I laughed. “Oh, I forgot. We
never celebrated these boring anniversaries
anyway.”
“My birthday has already passed. I don’t
celebrate belatedly.”
<
“Nora…”
I hung up, blocking the number.
The next day, two uninvited guests arrived.
Jack looked haggard, Lily less elegant than
usual, both with dark circles under their eyes.
Their life had been tough.
But their misery made me happy.
Jack’s first words were, “Nora, I’m not angry
anymore, stop this, okay?”
I sneered. “Why do you think I care about your
anger?”
“I’ve been clear. I don’t love you, I want a
divorce.”
<
Seeing my determination, Jack swayed.
Lily, impatient, rushed towards me, her
arrogance and triumph gone.
“Nora, my mother knows she’s wrong. Please forgive her.”
“It’s all my fault; I shouldn’t have faked a
marriage with Jack, nor sent my mother to your house.”
“If you drop the charges, I’ll do anything.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Really? What if I want
Jack to leave with nothing?”
