Chapter 7
To prevent my mother from being harassed, I transferred her to another hospital.
Jack and Lily called and texted countless times.
All asking me to drop the charges against Lily’s mother.
But their tone wasn’t pleading, it was demanding.
Except for Lily’s show of force with Jack, no
one from Lily’s family visited my mother.
Jack gave them the confidence.
As for Jack, my unconditional love gave him audacity.
Five years ago, he said, “Marry me, I’ll love you
forever,” and I gave him my heart.
<
He scorned it, leaving me heartbroken.
He even allowed others to hurt my mother.
This time, no matter what Jack said or did, I
wouldn’t give in.
I would make those who hurt my mother pay.
Ignoring them, I blocked their numbers.
After settling my mother, I found a lawyer to
handle the divorce and the lawsuit against Lily’s family.
Through a friend, I contacted a lawyer
specializing in divorce cases, Ethan Cole.
The name sounded familiar, but I didn’t think much of it.
At the cafe, he called me by my name.
<
“Nora?”
Seeing the well–dressed young man, I was
surprised. “You are?”
“Ethan Cole, your junior. You don’t remember
me? We worked together on Professor Hu’s
research project.”
A familiar figure surfaced in my mind.
“You’ve become a well–known lawyer.”
Ethan smiled modestly.
“You’re amazing too. I heard you’re a
department head at a Fortune 500 company.”
“After the project, I wanted to collaborate with
you, but I went abroad for an exchange
program.”
“By the time I returned, you’d already

Ethan sounded regretful.
I was stunned.
Ethan changed the subject. “Nora, I heard
you’re getting a divorce. What happened?”
I nodded, recounting everything about Jack and
Lily.
Ethan was furious. “How could there be such an
unappreciative man!”
“Don’t worry, I’m confident in winning this case.
I’ll help your mother get justice.”
“Actually, my mother’s case…” I hesitated.
Ethan understood.
He winked.

“Though I specialize in divorce cases, I’m not
unfamiliar with others.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t let you down.”
With Ethan’s assurance, I felt relieved.
I took a sip of coffee, missing the mischievous
glint in Ethan’s eyes.
