Chapter 8
1 gripped the edge of the table, but the pain was so bad I ended up on my knees anyway.[]
“Oh my god, are you okay?“]
People started rushing over when they saw me collapse.
I tried to say I was fine, but then I felt something warm running down my legs.]
“Someone call 911! Now!”
They took me to Declan’s hospital.]
The doctors in his department freaked out when they saw me. “Isn’t this Dr. Martinez’s wife? Jesus, there’s so much blood.“]
“Where’s Dr. Martinez?”
“He took three days off… he’s not here…”
Three days…]
A tear slipped down my cheek. Declan had told me it was just one day.[]
Pretty obvious who he was spending the other two days with.[]
“Dr. Martinez isn’t answering his phone! What do we do? Who’s gonna sign the consent forms?“]
It felt like someone was twisting a knife in my gut.[]
I managed to raise my shaking hand. “I’ll… I’ll sign.“[]
“I want to terminate the pregnancy.”
The doctors looked shocked. “Does Dr. Martinez know about this?”
“It’s my baby. Don’t I get to decide what happens to my own child?“[]
I was losing more blood by the minute, so they finally agreed.
Before I lost consciousness, I put my hand on my belly one last time.[]
I’m sorry, baby.
Mommy chose the wrong people to trust, and now you’re paying the price.
When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed.
I touched my flat stomach, and the emptiness hit me like a punch to the chest.[]
One of the doctors doing rounds came in when he saw I was awake.]
“Riley, how are you feeling?”
“Declan’s been impossible to reach lately. What’s going on with you two…?“]
I tried to smile, but my lips were so dry they cracked]
“We’re getting divorced.“]
The doctor’s eyes went wide, but he was professional enough not to pry
They made me stay in the hospital for two more days.
I was still weak as hell, but I checked myself out on day three
Chapter 8
First stop was the DMV to pick up my new license.[]
I left the signed divorce papers at home, grabbed my suitcase, and headed straight to the airport.[]
Two days, and the house had been completely empty.[]
Declan never came home once.]]
I booked the next flight to Miami.
I guess losing that much blood made me constantly cold–I just wanted to be somewhere warm.
Right before boarding, I checked my phone one last time.
Not a ringle text or call from Declan.[]
Two whole days, and he never once wondered where I was.
This marriage was definitely over.[]
