Chapter 6
Chloe had been playing with Declan all morning.
When lunch was ready, I called out to him.
“The restaurant has our table ready.”
Declan’s eyes immediately darted to Piper and Chloe.[
Piper bit her lip and quickly scooped Chloe out of Declan’s arms.[]
“Sorry for keeping you guys so long. We should let you eat.‘
Piper started walking away with Chloe, but suddenly the kid started screaming bloody murder.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Declan immediately took Chloe back from Piper.[]
“You wanna keep playing? That’s totally fine. How about we all eat together, and then we can play some more?“]]
He was so patient with her, going completely overboard with the whole “love me, love my kid” thing.
Piper shot me this subtle but smug look.]
I smiled back.
I’d just watched her pinch Chloe’s leg when she thought no one was looking.
This bitch was using her own kid as a weapon to steal my husband.[]
Declan walked ahead carrying Chloe, completely forgetting about his seven–months–pregnant wife.[]
Piper made sure to walk right beside me.[]
“So who do you think Declan loves more–my daughter or yours?”
She wasn’t even trying to hide how pleased with herself she was.
When we got to the restaurant, Declan went to the restroom.]
That’s when Piper really let her mask slip.
She gave me this cruel smile. “I stole your first husband, and now your second one is…“[]
“Riley, you’re such a pathetic loser. What’s even the point of you being alive?“[]
She looked at my belly with pure disgust. “You should’ve just donated that kidney to Chloe from the start.“]]
“Fucking failure!”
I glanced at frail little Chloe, then asked matter–of–factly:
“You know why your daughter got sick in the first place?”
“Bacause you’re a garbage human being.”
“Karma’s a bitch. It might take time, but it always comes around.“]
“You fucking psycho!”
Piper slammed her hand on the table, her face twisting with rage.]]
“Riley, how dare you curse my daughter! I should-“]
Chapter 6
She cut herself off when she heard Declan’s voice in the distance.
I was curious to see how she’d explain her outburst, but then she did something I never saw coming.]
She grabbed a glass of red wine and dumped it all over Chloe.[]
As Chloe started crying, Piper hauled off and slapped me across the face.
I was too shocked to even react.]
Declan came running over when he heard the commotion.[]
He touched my burning cheek. “What the hell happened? Why are you hitting people?“]
“What’s wrong with Chloe?“]
Piper went into full actress mode, tears in her eyes as she pulled Chloe close, her whole body shaking with fake rage.]
“Riley! I put up with your dirty looks and snide comments all day.“]
“But Chloe is off–limits! You had no right to hurt my baby!“[]
“She’s already sick–how could you throw wine at her?!“]
