Chapter 6
After I left, Griffin and his family rushed Ava to the hospital in a panic.]
But on the way, my mother–in–law also began struggling to breathe as her emotions triggered an asthma attack. Her face turned bluish–purple as she clutched Griffin’s hand, desperately pleading:[]
“Son… help me… I can’t breathe…“]
Meanwhile, Ava was furrowing her brow, clinging to Griffin’s sleeve.]
“Griffin… I’m having trouble breathing…”
Griffin’s forehead creased with worry, overwhelmed and uncertain who to comfort first.[]
Just as they were wheeling my mother–in–law into the emergency room, they encountered the hospital director and the asthma specialist.]
In that moment, Griffin forgot everything else and rushed forward, dropping to his knees before them.]
“Director Jensen, Dr. Reid, please save my mother!“]
“Her asthma’s flared up severely. It’s critical! Someone named Ava previously made an appointment with you–do you remember?”
The renowned specialist studied Griffin for a long moment before cautiously asking:[]
“You’re… Nora’s husband, right?“]
Griffin’s eyes lit up with hope.
“Yes, that’s me. But what does Nora have to do with this?”
The specialist spoke deliberately:[]
“What do you mean, no connection? She contacted me through Director Jensen specifically to examine her mother–in–law’s condition. I saw your photo on her phone when she showed me her family. I even complimented her filial devotion. But just two days ago, she told me the consultation wasn’t needed anymore. So what’s going on now?“]
Hearing this, Griffin looked up in confusion and shock.
“Nora? You’re saying Nora contacted you? That’s impossible… wasn’t it Ava who made the appointment?”
The specialist frowned, clearly displeased at being questioned.]
“Are you suggesting I’m lying to you?”
Griffin could tell the specialist was annoyed. He tried to say more, but the specialist had already turned away, giving him no chance to explain further. After the specialist left, Griffin collapsed to the floor.[]
They had never believed I was capable of consulting with a renowned specialist, assuming it was all Ava’s doing. Only now did they realize how wrong they’d been about me all along.
In that moment, Griffin was completely lost for words.]
When he recovered, he tried to chase after the specialist.
“Doctor, I’m sorry for the misunderstanding! Please, my mother is innocent in all this. I’m begging you to save her…“]
But Director Jensen had already pulled Griffin aside, apologetic but firm:[]
“I’m sorry, Mr. Thorpe, but we’re flying to Boston for a conference shortly. We can’t assist with the surgery. Rest assured, our medical team is the best in the city. We’ll do everything possible to save your mother.“]
With that, they both left.

And I only learned about this later from Director Jensen.]]
It is said that Griffin knelt outside the operating room while his father, overcome with regret, punched him in the face.]]
“You ungrateful son! Look what you’ve done to your mother!“]]
“I told you before–no matter how shameless Nora might be, she wouldn’t joke about something like this. None of you believed me, and now look what’s happened! If anything happens to your mother, it’s entirely your fault!“]
Griffin hung his head in silence, like a child caught in wrongdoing.
Meanwhile, his father’s shouting frightened the baby, who began wailing loudly.[]
Annoyed by the crying, his father roughly placed the infant on a plastic chair.[]
“What are you crying about? Always crying! People would think we’re raising a little emperor!“[]
“Griffin, this is your son–you deal with him!“[]

But Griffin was beyond caring about anything else.
He slowly pulled out his phone, wanting to call me. Perhaps I was the only one who could contact the specialist to perform the surgery.[]
But my phone was completely unreachable.[]
Because by then, I had already boarded my flight abroad.[]
