Chapter 8
Luke said, “I’ll give you the ashes, but please
don’t leave me.”
“What right do you have to ask me to stay?
After you hurt me and killed my mother? I’ll
never forgive you.”
“Luke, I’m not in love with you anymore!”
I pushed past him. He panicked. “You’re
weak. Don’t go. If you don’t want to see me, I’ll leave.”
He stumbled back, a far cry from his usual
self.
I smiled. “Luke, goodbye forever.”
The police came quickly, ordering Luke to return the ashes. I quickly buried my mother. I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Kneeling at the grave, I didn’t know what to say. Finally, I said, “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll be
<
fine. Nobody can bully me anymore. I don’t
love Luke. I won’t be controlled by him.”
The breeze felt like Mom’s presence. She
wouldn’t want to see me hurt. My eyes welled
- up.
With Luke, I thought I was his only one. Even
with Lily’s taunts, I ignored them.
Luke chose me. But now I see his love was a
cage. It wasn’t love, it was an exchange.
He treated feelings like commodities.
Luke’s a businessman, avoiding losses. In this
unequal exchange, he thought he got the
better deal, so he demanded more from me.
But love isn’t a transaction. We compensate
each other, not just take.
Luke only took. I ignored him.
I didn’t answer his calls. Netizens didn’t spare
Luke and Lily.
My social media was discovered, my number
exposed. I got hundreds of messages a day,
but I didn’t reply.
Staying calm helped. People wondered if Luke
had confined me.
The internet was worried about me. I’d
packed and moved.
Luke waited downstairs every day. I stayed
inside. I needed rest.
<
Donating bone marrow is damaging. Twice in
five years my body couldn’t handle it. Luke
sent flowers and food–I threw it all away.
He persisted. Finally, I went downstairs.
Seeing me, his eyes lit up!
“Sarah, you finally came!”
“Luke. Enough.”
I sighed. “What’s the point? Even if we reconcile, there will be a crack. We can’t go
back.”
“No, no! I’ve gotten rid of Lily. I even broke her leg. She won’t bother you again!‘
“I have evidence of everything she did, and I
gave it to the police. She’ll pay. Let’s start
over.”
I’d never seen him so desperate. He watched
me, hesitant to approach.
I looked into his eyes, realizing he’d lost
weight. He wasn’t his old self.
Chapter 9
I raised an eyebrow. “Luke, it’s too late. If
you bother me again, I’ll leave this city,
disappear forever.‘
Guilt flashed in his eyes. He left silently.
He knew I meant it. After letting go of my
feelings, I became cold and hard.
く
Leaving wasn’t just words. I really intended to
leave.
Luke, afraid I’d disappear, sent people to
check on me, but he didn’t dare show himself.
We didn’t see each other for a long time.
Finally, after the worst was over, I breathed a sigh of relief. Then I saw it trending:
#LukeHarrison Arrested#
Perhaps due to public pressure, investigators
started an inquiry. His actions were exposed.
Especially his forcing employees to be tested
for Lily.
<
The old videos resurfaced, along with Luke’s
company chat messages.
He’d forcefully required everyone to
participate in the testing.
Due to his power, employees complained but
didn’t dare resist.
The exposure sparked outrage.
“He’s so bold!”
“Didn’t the employees resist?”
“Resist? Think again. If you refused, your
child abroad would receive a tearful call from
Luke. That’s how tyrannical he was!”
<
“Luke was obsessed with Lily. She’s not even
that pretty!”
“Looks don’t matter, it’s about the
chemistry!”
“Was Sarah chosen that time?”
“Yes! Lily’s evil. And Luke is an accomplice.
Those medical institutions need to be
punished!”
Luke was speechless. The criticism was
overwhelming. Harrison Corp was caught off
guard.
Luke panicked. He achieved his position with
ruthless tactics. Many people envied him.
<
His family business wasn’t squeaky clean.
Shady deals were exposed, leading to
seizures.
Someone reported Harrison Corp for tax
evasion. Luke and several executives were
arrested.
During my internship, Lily abused her power.
Many interns and employees were targeted,
but Luke always protected her.
Now, his downfall exposed everything,
including Lily’s misdeeds and company
secrets.
I didn’t know the whistleblower, but I imagine
they had no choice. Nobody would risk their
career.
く
I laughed. Luke’s fall allowed everyone to take
a kick at him.
It had nothing to do with me. I packed my
bags for a trip, taking Mom’s favorite
necklace. I went to my usual restaurant.
I saw a strange woman dragging herself
across the sidewalk.
It was more crawling than walking. People
avoided her, disgusted. She was disheveled,
her clothes dirty.
I hesitated, then approached. She looked
familiar. It was Lily!
Luke broke her legs and abandoned her. The
Chen family didn’t protect her. They couldn’t
Seeing me, Lily’s face turned red. She tried to
growl at me, but she couldn’t stand.
She could only crawl, cursing me. Kids threw
dirty water on her. She screamed, and I
smiled.
Lily never imagined being so degraded. Did
she regret her past?
Because of her, every day was torture. No
matter how I pleaded, she appeared.
Now, I only felt pity and sorrow.
She begged for help, but no one cared.
I shook my head and walked away. She
screamed, “Sarah, are you happy? I got what
I deserved! Are you happy?”
<
How could I be happy? She should suffer
more. My mother was gone. But she was still
alive.
I walked away. Lily screamed and cursed, only
attracting more abuse from passersby.
I ignored her and left.
My lawyer called, surprisingly. I was at the
airport. He said Luke wanted to see me.
I scoffed. I’ll never see him again.
It’s not that I hated him intensely. I just didn’t
want to hate anymore. It was better to forget
him.
To move on.
