Chapter 5
I lost consciousness. I saw Luke rushing
toward me.
I woke up to the smell of antiseptic. Luke was
by my side. Seeing me awake, he clasped my
hand.
“Sarah, how are you feeling?”
く
I pulled my hand away, silent. Saying anything
was pointless.
Seeing my vacant stare, he grew anxious.
“Sarah, talk to me. Please, don’t be like this.”
I stared at the ceiling, remembering our first
meeting.
I was a new intern. During my lunch break, I went to the stairwell and saw Lily on tiptoe,
confessing to Luke.
He rejected her.
I don’t know why. They seemed close, yet he
refused her.
Loverheard everything. Lily held a grudge
L
She made my internship a living hell, even
openly trying to get me fired.
Then she was diagnosed with a terminal
illness, needing a bone marrow transplant.
The company, under Luke’s direction, started
compatibility testing.
I was the perfect match.
I went from intern to executive assistant.
Luke showered me with attention. I was naive,
never having dated. His kindness captivated
- me. I fell for him.
I donated bone marrow to Lily, but I couldn’t
leave afterward.
Luke said I was Lily’s savior, her lifeline. I had
to stay.
く
In return, he gave me a good life, bringing my
mom from our small town.
I admit I was blinded by Luke’s charm. I
trusted him. Lily’s interference made our
relationship strange.
Mom said I was simple–hearted; once I chose
someone, I’d do anything. I tried to melt his
heart with my kindness.
Five years. Five years with Luke, five years
entangled with Lily. Our relationship was
always on–again, off–again. I didn’t know if it
was right.
Looking back, I had other choices. At least, I
could work.
Before Mom died, she held my hand, hoping
to see me married. That was her peace of
mind.
Luke betrayed me, shattering everything we
had. It’s pointless to dwell on it. I just wanted
to escape.
Luke couldn’t take it anymore.
“Sarah! Sarah!” He shook me, lifting me up. “Sarah, talk to me! What do you want? Tell
me, I’ll do anything!”
I remained silent. Lily was always more
important to him. What I said or did didn’t
matter. Lily could change everything with a
single word.
So what was the point?
<
I ignored him.
He grew desperate, his eyes red. “Is it that
you’ll only look at me again if I give you back
your mother’s ashes?”
