Sophie stood aside.
Now aware of the full truth, her condescending glare had vanished. Instead, she reached out to grasp my hand-but I pivoted away and dialed my father.

Liv’s sister stood paralyzed as if struck by lightning, being pulled away by her husband.
She seemed to have aged a decade in that moment.
I felt some pity for this poor woman, but I knew Liv would never learn her lesson.

Time flew by, and by college graduation, Liv was about to be released.
I had nearly forgotten about the whole affair until a classmate mentioned it.
Drew never changed his ways. He started to make purchases by swiping his credit card to appear wealthy, and when he really couldn’t use his credit card anymore, he even resorted to borrowing from loan sharks.
He didn’t even borrow much-$1000 for limited-edition sneakers.
But the interest ballooned to tens of thousands, and when he couldn’t repay, debt collectors called relentlessly. He eventually dropped out and went home.
He didn’t even finish college.
While discussing Drew, Zoe suddenly spoke up:
‘Isn’t Liv getting out of prison soon?”
paused. Liv had been sentenced to three years and seven months.
Calculating the time, she would indeed be released soon.
But with a criminal record, her life was effectively ruined.
Major companies wouldn’t hire her, graduate school was impossible. Maybe her future would be spent rying chicken drumsticks in a certain fried chicken shop.
For a moment of vanity and jealousy, these two people had destroyed their futures.
I felt a touch of melancholy, but then realized none of this concerned me anymore.
Let bygones be bygones-I had long since moved on and found the memory almost amusing now.
After breaking up with Drew, I dated another wealthy guy, but one without the usual rich kid vices-humble
and cultured.
Looking back, I realized these experiences weren’t necessarily bad. They taught me valuable lessons and helped me recognize the right person when he came along.
