Chapter 9

Two days later, I returned to the dorm to find the room filled with an overpowering rose scent.

My Penhaligon’s Rose Royale perfume lay shattered on the floor, its beautiful glass bottle in pieces, the pale pink liquid already mostly evaporated.

Before I could speak, Zoe ran over and picked up the broken fox-shaped cap, devastated.

“Oh my god, this is so expensive! The authentic version costs over $500 at the boutique! It’s all gone!”

She looked up at me, more heartbroken than I was.

Liv sat casually filing her nails, remarking airily:

‘Maddie’s rich, right? A $500 perfume is nothing-probably doesn’t even cover one of her meals.”

That was true-at a proper restaurant, $500 might be the price of just one dish.

But that didn’t mean I didn’t care.

frowned slightly. We’d all been in class except for Liv, who had skipped.

When I left, the perfume was safely on my desk. If someone had touched my things, it was most likely Liv.

But I had no proof, so I just glanced at her and swallowed my anger.

Liv watched me restraining myself and curled her lips into a mocking smile.

figured she was probably bitter about having her rich-boyfriend fantasy shattered and had some

resentment toward me.

Though it was stupid, I could understand. I decided to treat it as an act of charity toward someone mentally

challenged.

But I never expected Liv to escalate!

Almost every day after that, I’d return to find something of mine damaged.

My Lamer cream, SK-II Essence, and my favorite Christian Louboutin lipstick were either emptied out or

broken.

Eventually, I found some white sticky substance in my facial cream.

I scooped out a spoonful and took a sniff.

It seems that this smell is… shampoo!

My brain buzzed with anger as I stood up abruptly, accidentally bumping the cabinet beside me.

The cabinet door creaked open, revealing my slashed and destroyed bags inside.

My pupils contracted as I pulled out the bags.

I didn’t obsessively pursue luxury items, but my mom and female relatives often gave me gifts, including these Gucci and Chanel bags.

I rarely used them, so they were nearly new, but what had been perfectly intact and clean bags yesterday were now brutally slashed.

The delicate leather curled up gruesomely along neat knife cuts. They seemed to have been soaked in water

00-sticky and wet, making a mess of my cabinet.

My anger flared instantly!

Liv had been destroying my things for days, but I’d kept quiet to preserve her dignity.

figured a girl from a difficult background might be sensitive, and I was willing to let her vent her

rustrations.

But my continued tolerance only made her more brazen! She’d actually slashed my bags!

turned toward Liv, who was furtively watching me, and struggled to control my rage: “What is this

upposed to mean?!”

Liv snickered, averting her gaze.

What do YOU mean? Nothing to do with me. Besides, you’re so rich-do these couple of bags even matter to

you?”

My anger reached its peak as I pointed at the bags.

‘If you didn’t cut these bags up, then who did? And who poured shampoo into my face cream? Why are you doing all this? You’re the one who started this whole mess-what the hell did I ever do to you?”

Liv just rolled her eyes at me.

“You’ve got no evidence that it was me. I could just as well say that you did it to yourself.

“Anyway, you live in that swanky downtown place. Do you really care about a couple of designer bags? Just

go out and buy some new ones.”

I nodded.

“Okay then. These bags are worth over ten grand. You know, if the damages are over three hundred bucks, you can file a police report. I’m calling 911 right this second. If you didn’t do it, that’s fine. Let the cops figure out who did.”

When Liv heard me mention calling the police, a flash of panic crossed her face, but she still tried to act all

cool and collected.

Go on and call them. It’s not a big deal. You’re really making a huge deal out of nothing. Rich people really

re the stingiest bunch.”

ignored her and called 911, explained the situation, and waited for the police to collect evidence.
