Chapter 1
My roommate Liv had recently started dating some loaded dude.
She used to rock knockoff bags, but out of nowhere, she’s flaunting this legit Chanel quilted purse. Supposedly her boyfriend hooked her up with it.
And get this, this rich boyfriend of hers has been sending all kinds of snacks and gifts to our dorm. Liv’s been showing them off to us, one by one, like it’s no big deal.
“Maddie, bet you can’t guess how much this bag set me back,” she said, all full of herself.
I just gave it a quick look.
It was last season’s Chanel, and it didn’t even look brand new. Maybe worth a grand, tops.
But for Liv, who came from a pretty humble background, this was straight-up luxury.
We’d just moved into the new dorms, and I knew I’d be stuck with these roommates for ages. I didn’t want to start any drama, so I forced a smile.
“Wow, that’s Chanel, right? Gotta be a few grand, at least?”
Liv shot me this super judgmental look, eyeing my Gucci bag, and was like, “How does it stack up against yours?”
I was just like… speechless.
Liv’s family wasn’t well-off. I’d heard her mom was a gambling addict, her dad was bedridden, and the whole family depended on her older sister.
But you know what’s crazy? A lot of the time, the broke folks are the ones who care the most about looking cool and having status. She didn’t even bother applying for those school grants ’cause she was worried we’d think her family was dirt poor.
My family’s pretty well-off, so I sometimes wear or carry designer stuff my mom gets me. Ever since Liv became my roommate, she’s seemed to have it out for me. She’s always trying to outdo me, sometimes in sneaky ways and other times, not so much.
At first, she was just showing off her knockoff stuff and making herself look like a rich chick online, you know, faking it.
But ever since she started dating this so-called rich boyfriend, she’s been showing off all sorts of things in my face every day, like she’s trying to prove she’s better than me or something.

Chapter 1
I thought it was kind of silly, but I could get why she was so vain. So I decided to play along with her:
“Yours is way more expensive. Mine? It’s no big deal. Just a knockoff, really.”
And yep, as soon as Liv heard that, her whole face relaxed. She looked like she’d just chugged a shot of hard liquor-she was totally high on her own pride.
“Honestly, you gotta have some standards in life,” she said all nonchalant.
I just nodded to keep the peace. “Yeah, you’re so right about that.”
Our other roommates butted in: “Damn, Liv, that’s one pricey bag. Your boyfriend’s really got it bad for and loves spoiling you!”
you
Zoe, especially, who wasn’t exactly rolling in dough, was holding that second-hand bag like it was the crown ewels and gushing: “Liv, your boyfriend’s swimming in cash and treats you like a queen. This bag… think I
could borrow it for a bit sometime?”
Liv just waved her hand, like it was no big deal. “Just be careful with it, don’t go ruining it!”
couldn’t help but snicker to myself. A beat-up Chanel that even my housekeeper wouldn’t touch with a en-foot pole had become Liv’s most precious thing.
But hey, it didn’t bother me, so I didn’t feel like getting into it any more.
Later that night, my boyfriend Drew called me from downstairs.
