Chapter 5

At lunch. Yuna took me through a maze of turns to the cafeteria kitchen.

The lunch lady’s face soured when she saw me.

“Yuna, I only made one portion. Why’d you bring someone else?”

Yuna quickly took the tray from her.

“Mom, I don’t eat much. This is enough for both of us.”

“She’s as pitiful as me and gets bullied too. We gotta save where we can.”

At the table, I looked at Yuna’s hopeful eyes inviting me to share her meal.

Couldn’t bring myself to disappoint her, so I tucked my meal card-which I’d just loaded with a hundred

grand yesterday-back into my sleeve.

I picked up my chopsticks, telling myself this was the last time I’d live like this.

Tomorrow I’m announcing to everyone that my meal card has a hundred thousand on it!

I’d barely taken one bite when a familiar voice rang out.

“Stella, give me back the meal card.”

I looked up to see Sutton’s ice-cold queen bee face.

“What meal card?”

“The one Grayson gave you today. Don’t be greedy for things you shouldn’t take.”

I’d thrown that meal card right back at him. Never took it.

“I don’t have it.”

Sutton’s lackey knocked over my tray.

The chicken leg Yuna had just given me hit the floor.

“Stop lying. I saw Grayson stuff the card in your desk myself.”

I was furious, standing up to argue with them.

But the meal card hidden in my sleeve accidentally fell out.

Sutton’s lackey snatched it up quick.

“Told you she took it! Still denying it!”

“That’s my meal card.”

The lackey wasn’t listening.

She grabbed the card and ran to swipe it at the counter.

‘Holy shit!”

Before I could stop her, the cashier let out a shriek.

‘Why is there so much money on this card?”

The lackey looked at Sutton.

‘Didn’t Grayson say he only gave her five hundred?”

Why is there… a hundred thousand?”

Sutton’s expression went through every emotion possible.

Like she couldn’t believe Grayson would be so generous with me.

She snatched back the card and stormed off.

didn’t chase her.

Because a hundred grand? That’s felony theft territory.

After they left, Yuna was still sighing over the chicken leg on the floor.

I pulled her up, went to the counter, bought two big chicken legs with cash, and stuffed them in her mouth.

“Eat up, drink up, don’t let shit get to you.”

Yuna chewed away while asking:

“Your ex put a hundred grand on that meal card. Pretty generous.”

Me: … What a sweet, naive child.
