Chapter 2
Six years ago… Oakland…
My assistant’s words shattered what was left of my composure.
Then came Liam’s financial records from the past five years.
I immediately spotted a massive down payment made two weeks ago-for a luxury mansion right across
from our house.
So Liam really had been planning their little reunion all along.
And what was I?
Personal ATM?
Sex toy?
Tears streamed down my face as I tore up that bogus marriage license, then fed it into the paper shredder, watching it get destroyed piece by piece.
Before I could even confront him, Liam texted me: [Babe, why are you digging through my finances?]
[We’ve been married eight years. I’ve always been honest with you, treated you like a queen. Don’t you trust me anymore?]
[What’s there to investigate?]
Yeah, he knew it, huh?
Four years dating, eight years damn “married”.
Twelve whole years-what an incredible performance!
When I missed the apple pie from the little bakery near my childhood home, he drove hundreds of miles to find the old baker and learn the recipe, then came back to make it for me himself.
When I caught that virus and nearly died from the fever, my oxygen levels dropping to the 80s, he stayed by my hospital bed for three straight days. Taking my temperature every twenty minutes, making sure I took my meds. The man didn’t sleep for 72 hours straight until I was out of danger.
So, I really thought he loved me.

But apparently love can be faked.
I was just another mark in his long con.
I sent him a screenshot of Rosalie’s family photo:
[Quit the act, Liam.]
[All these years, nothing but lies.]
Calls and texts started flooding in, but I powered off my phone and called an emergency board meeting about Sterling Corp’s financial reports.
The meeting lasted six brutal hours.
By the time it ended, it was pouring outside.
Somehow Liam had made it back to North Capitol.
He stood there with an umbrella, walking toward me like nothing had happened.
deliberately swerved around him. “I’ve got a car and driver.”
Without a word, he hoisted me over his shoulder and tossed me into his car.
The second the doors slammed shut, he spoke:
You think I don’t know you’ve been trying to manipulate my company behind my back? Trying to destroy
ne?”
All because of this?”
He turned to face me, every inch the sophisticated businessman-nothing like the broken kid from twelve
years ago.
‘Look, babe, I’ll admit it-Rosalie was a mistake I made when I was young and stupid.”
‘But we’ve been together all these years. What I feel for you is real.”
“So, you’re really gonna throw a tantrum over something this trivial?”
I almost laughed in his face.
“Faking a marriage certificate to con me for years while you’ve got a whole wife and kid on the side-you call
that trivial?”
“Liam, if it wasn’t for me, you’d be rotting in some gutter right now instead of living like a king!”
Hearing this, he suddenly slammed his fist against the steering wheel.
‘Dammit! Adrienne, when is this gonna be enough? I rushed back here to make things right-what more do
you want?”
‘You helped me because it served your purposes too. Don’t act like you’re some saint.”
Besides, I’ve been busting my ass all these years to give you the life you deserve.”
Rosalie and the kid barely get scraps from me. Stop being such a drama queen.”
Here I am-the only daughter of North Capitol’s wealthiest family-helping some nobody out of the kindness of my heart.
turned a street rat into a golden boy, and he’s telling me I did it for myself?!
f what he said was true, what the hell did I get out of this?
Vas I after his money or trying to keep some loyal lapdog?
My sincere love was completely worthless to him!
uddenly, Liam’s phone rang, the name [My Everything] flashing across the car’s display screen.
le shot me a guilty look and switched to private mode, but I could still hear that sweet little voice:
Daddy, the house is so big and pretty! When are you coming home to us?”
o he really did bring them to North Capitol.
The rain was coming down harder now, wipers on full blast, but visibility was still trash.
iam got distracted and had to slam the brakes at a red light. The car instantly spun out of control.
We flipped over, trapping me inside with searing pain shooting through my leg.
‘Babe, you okay?!”
Liam was trying to unbuckle my seatbelt when that voice came through the phone again:
“Daddy, it’s raining so hard and there’s thunder! Mommy and I are scared.”
“If Daddy doesn’t come take care of us, Mommy and I are going back to Oakland and we’ll never talk to you again, hmph!”

The phone went dead.
Liam froze mid-action. “Honey, Juniper and Rosalie need me right now.”
Next second, like a man possessed, he violently kicked out the shattered glass on the driver’s side and
rawled out.
Wait here, someone will definitely come rescue you.”
In the pouring rain, he left only an anxious figure running into the distance, not saying another word.
