Chapter 8
For the following days, we steered clear of each other.
Cole repeatedly tried to talk to me, but I refused.
He looked at me with pity: “I know you’re still sad about your parents, but you also need to think more about our future. I forgive you for ignoring me these past few days, but you won’t get this chance again.”
“Don’t forget, from now on, you won’t have your parents backing you up.”
Once again, I hated myself for trusting the wrong person in the past.
But fortunately, there was still a chance to remedy the situation now.
ust as we were speaking, the doorbell rang.
Cole immediately frowned: “Who’s coming so late?”
didn’t answer but went to open the door.
‘Good daughter! Good son-in-law! Mom and Dad are back!”
My parents stood outside the door wearing casual clothes. Seeing me, my mother gave me a big hug.
Watching this scene, Cole froze on the spot. Suddenly, he charged forward, trying to slap me.
But the slap never reached my face; my father intercepted it.
My father runs a martial arts school; he’s full of strength. Cole, who sits in front of a computer all day, was
no match for him.
Dad grabbed Cole’s wrist, holding on tightly: “You dare hit my daughter?!”
Cole ignored my father, instead looking at me furiously: “You paid the hundred thousand after all?!”
“What hundred thousand?” my parents asked simultaneously, confused.
Cole snorted coldly: “It costs a hundred thousand to rescue you two! And now you’re acting innocent! Riley Thompson, you didn’t listen to a single thing I said! Fine! Riley, You’ve really grown some nerve!”
As he spoke, he charged at me again, trying to attack me. Unfortunately, it was all blocked by my father.
Both Mom and Dad asked in confusion: “Explain yourself clearly.”

As he spoke, Dad also asked me: “Did you gamble or take out loans?”
I spread my hands: “Neither. How would I know I spent a hundred thousand?”
Cole’s emotions grew more agitated: “If you didn’t spend a hundred thousand, how did they get out?! That’s a hundred thousand dollars! My parents scrimped and saved their whole lives and couldn’t accumulate that much money! And you spent it on these two old fools! You never considered me at all, did you?!”
Finally, my parents grasped the situation.
Dad’s face turned ashen: “What do you mean? When did we need to spend a hundred thousand? We both
have pensions, health insurance; we’re perfectly healthy. Our physical exams showed no major issues.”
Mom chimed in beside him: “Were you tricked by some scam text message? You should check immediately.’
Cole wanted to rage, but he had no outlet for his strength; he was completely subdued by my father.
He panted heavily, glaring at me: “I’m calling the police! You misappropriated our joint marital savings vithout permission! I’m going to sue you to make you cough up that money!”
opened my mobile banking app and shoved the balance directly in his face: “Look clearly! Every penny of ur savings is still there! I didn’t spend that hundred thousand! Are you satisfied now?!”
eeing the bank balance, Cole froze, then miraculously calmed down: “Mom, Dad, I must have nisunderstood. At the time, it wasn’t that we didn’t want to rescue you; it’s just that we young couple have truggled hard, you understand.”
My parents were utterly bewildered: “We just went on a trip. How did it get to rescue or not?”
Cole asked: “Weren’t you trapped in the Northwest wilderness? The rescue team called Riley! Don’t hide it
rom me!”
We didn’t go to the Northwest. We went to Portland!”
