Chapter 3

After Cole left, I called all the parents. Told them tours left from the city.

After hearing that, my in-laws immediately demanded me bought Business Class tickets for them and

arrived here.

The moment they walked in, and my mother-in-law started right in: “Traveling again? Money grow on trees?’

Loud. Cheap. Years of marriage taught me to tune her out.

I smiled, guiding her in. “Cole said you two never traveled! Here’s your shot! Money’s for spending, right?”

she sat, eyeing me.

showed my phone. “Look, great agency. My folks use ’em tons. No sales junk, awesome guides, all

Ritz-Carlton level hotels!”

After scrolling my chat with the agent, she looked clearly interested, but then frowned.

You send your folks everywhere, book us this cheapie?” She sniffed. “My son makes good cash, but all

vasted on your family, huh?”

kept smiling. “One trip not enough? We can add stuff? See more?”

ust then, my father-in-law stood. Spotted the two fancy tickets on the table. Grabbed them. His face

larkened. “You book us $180… send your folks $800?!”

Mother-in-law snatched them. Screeched, stomped, then flopped on the floor, slapping her legs. “Nightmare! hought you finally had a heart! Garbage tour for us?!”

tried explaining fast: “Cole bought those to help his buddy! Promo price!”

he shoved the $800 tickets at me. “We’re taking these.”

I… can’t,” I stammered. After all, those tickets were bought by Cole.

The exploded, “You just hate us having nice things! Think we’re dirt?! Trying to dump this cheap junk on us!”

Even quiet father in law got mad. “We see the videos! Cheap tours lock old folks up! Starve ’em! No bathroom unless they buy crap! Wanna shame us? Just say it!”

I was stuck. Pointed at my phone chat. “My parents went with this agency loads. They’re really great!”

Chapter 3

Mother-in-law smacked my phone down. “Don’t care! Book our flights. Now! We’re going Northwest!

I grabbed my phone, fed up. Seeing her stubborn streak, I called Cole.

First call voicemail. Went to redial. Father-in-law snapped: “Leave him! Man’s working! Woman shouldn’t butt in!”

Years of this taught me to pick fights. “Just need Cole’s okay.”

Father-in-law cut me off. “Okay for what? Man works, woman runs the house! Don’t bug him! Just book the flights for us!”

Mother-in-law chimed: “Right! When Cole gets busy, months no call is usual! Don’t wreck his promotion!”

Deep breaths, Riley. Only meet them twice a year. Just get through it.

[ sighed, opened the flight app. Put their stuff in, found a flight that night, went to pay, but mother-in-law snatched my phone.

‘Economy?!” she shrieked. “Peasant class! My son owns in the city! We fly Business!”

After several rounds of hassle, I can’t be bothered to argue anymore. Since she insists on flying first class,

just let her have her way.

Tickets booked, they finally calmed down.

‘I’ll push back the $180 tour I got you. Deposit’s good a year.”

Mother-in-law wasn’t done. “Think I’m dumb?! You just wanna pawn off that cheap junk! We won’t go! Just refund it… or send your parents!”

Her eyes lit up. “Yeah, just let your parents go on this cheap-ass tour group – let them suffer a bit, then they’l

never want to travel again!”

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Even tuning them out for years, that sting hurt.

“Fine,” I said flatly. “My parents take the $180 tour.”
