Chapter 1
I got a call from SAR-my folks are stranded in restricted wilderness and need a rescue. They warned me to prepare for a hefty price tag.
Upon hearing that, my husband, Cole Braxton, immediately snatched my phone: “It’s a scam. Don’t believe
them!”
He smashed my phone and even threatened divorce if I used our money for the rescue.
But, little did he know… the travel tickets he’d bought for my parents had been snatched away by his
parents.
The one, trapped in that deadly wilderness waiting for rescue… were HIS parents.
“Hello, Ms. Thompson? This is Search and Rescue. Your parents have entered a restricted wilderness zone. We’re not a volunteer organization, so the rescue operation will cost approximately one hundred thousand
dollars.”
The figure they quoted was hefty. Still, with the savings Cole and I had piled up over the years, we could manage it, even if it meant tightening our belts.
“Rescue them, absolutely!” I responded instantly. “How do I transfer-”
Before I could finish, Cole snatched the phone from my hand.
His voice was cold and final. “Those seniors went in there on their own. We’re not wasting resources. Thanks
for calling.”
What the hell?
I lunged for the phone, but Cole hurled it onto the floor with a crash.
He glared at me, furious. “Riley, have you lost your mind? That’s years of savings! Gone, just like that?”
I stared at him, stunned. “What are you talking about? They’re our parents! You always go on about how hard they worked raising us, how we owe them!”
With that, I grabbed the phone. Thank god for the tough case and screen protector. Cracked, but working.
Relief hit me. The rescue line was still open. Kneeling, I said, “I’ll pay! Get them out!”

Chapter 1
Cole charged over, ripped the phone away again, and yelled into it, “Rescue, my ass! I said NO! Those old fools walked in there by themselves! They get what they deserve!”
He killed the call.
I gaped at him. “Cole Braxton! Are you even human?! They’re your parents!”
He snorted. “My parents? They’re yours, Riley Thompson. Listen up: you spend one cent on this, we’re done. Remember, you can’t touch our money without my say-so.”
After said that, he directly stormed into the bedroom and locked the door.
My heart froze. I sat on the floor, trying to breathe, scrambling for a way bypass him to save Mom and Dad.
Then, it hit me like ice water.
He clearly thought it was my parents out there.
But the people who actually took those travel tickets… were his mom and dad.
