Chapter 11
The windows and doors were shut tight, blocking out every trace of light. The darkness was so complete, Bruno couldn’t see his own hand in front of his face.
His phone was tossed aside on the nightstand, its harsh ringtone shattering the quiet. He didn’t even bother to check who was calling he just didn’t care.
But whoever it was refused to give up. Each time he let it ring out, the call came again, stubborn and insistent.
After a long, silent standoff, Bruno finally caved
He grabbed his phone, frowning when he saw the name “Kylie” flash on the screen. Imitation prickled beneath his skin. Without a second thought, he hit decline and blocked her number.
The silence returned, heavy and absolute. Bruno let out a slow breath, hoping for peace.!!
It lasted all of two minutes before a call from an unfamiliar number lit up his phone.
He didn’t need to guess. It had to be Kylie.
Bruno ended the call and blocked the number in one swift move.
He flopped back onto his bed, eyes fixed on the ceiling, his mind replaying Lina’s smile again and again.”
He hadn’t realized it before, but somewhere along the way, she’d come to mean everything to him.
He didn’t get long to wallow–Kylie found him.
“Bruno, what is your problem?” she snapped, storming into the room without knocking. Her eyes were blazing, hurt and anger written all over her face.
She’d jumped at the chance to get engaged to the Morris family. For her, a Hudson–Morris union was a perfect deal–two powerful families, nothing but advantages.
Bruno was handsome, their backgrounds matched, and when they first met, he’d been polite and charming enough.
If she had any complaints, it was that during his memory loss, he’d dated someone else and kept her around. But Amber said she’d handle Lina, and Bruno always seemed to take Kylie’s side anyway. So she hadn’t worried
Until yesterday, when he came home and suddenly vanished–no texts, no calls, nothing.!!
After some digging, she learned Lina had left on her own.
Kylie hadn’t thought he’d care. He’d always seemed indifferent to Lina.
But he did care. Enough to lock himself in his room and shut out the world.
Bruno barely looked at her before turning away, sinking deeper into the blankets, looking completely drained.
“She’s just some random woman, Bruno. Or have you forgotten I’m your fiancée? Kylie’s voice cracked with frustration. She stepped closer, reaching for him, trying to pull him up
The moment her cool hand touched his wrist, an overwhelming discomfort shot through him.
Almost without thinking, he shoved her away.
Kylie stumbled, caught off guard, and landed on the floor with a hard thud.
Pain radiated up her arm and tears filled her eyes.
“Bruno, did you just push me?” she whispered, disbelief and hurt making her voice tremble, eyes rimmed red, her whole face softening with vulnerability.
He stared, frozen, just realizing wha
he’d done. He opened his mouth to explain, but nothing came out. In the end, he just stayed silent. Bruno had no idea what was happening to him.
The engagement wasn’t new–he’d agreed to it, at least in the beginning
He was the Morris Corporation’s only heir–the genius, the one everyone envied. He’d always been that guy the smart one, the rich one, the good–looking one 1
People envied his brains, his family, his looks l
With a future like his, how could his wife be someone with no family, no money, no connections?%
He’d told himself over and over Lina wasn’t good enough for him.1
It never crossed lus mind that Lina would actually leave.
He figured, even if he did marry Kylie, he’d always make sure Lina was taken care of. He wouldn’t let her fall back into the
d to worry about having a place to sleep on something to eat
But she left–quietly, firmly, without a word or even a chance for him to stop her.
Only now did he realize–too late–that after all those years together, Lina had become a part of him he couldn’t let go.”
Looking at Kylie, still sitting on the floor Bruno finally admitted the truth: he regretted it all.
