Amber’s voice echoed through the room, but Bruno acted like he couldn’t hear a thing, completely lost in his own thoughts.
“Bruno, I’m talking to you. Are you listening?”
Amber waved a hand in front of his face, but he didn’t even flinch. He just kept whispering the same name, over and over.”
“Lina… Lina..
Hearing that, Amber’s expression soured. She frowned, her eyes filled with barely hidden disdain. Lina–just a poor girl with no background–had only managed to get close to the Morris family because Bruno lost his memory. Being around old money had opened doors for her, sure, but you could still see the small–town awkwardness no matter what designer clothes she put on.
She and Bruno were never meant to be together. At least the girl seemed to understand that she hadn’t tried to cling him for long. Amber glanced around the living room, still a mess from earlier, and checked the time. Suddenly, something seemned to click. She raised her eyebrows, a hint of satisfaction in her eyes as she looked at her son.

Amber scoffed at his certainty. “Can’t be? I offered her five million dollars, and she didn’t even hesitate to take it.”

Bruno latched onto those words like they’d burned him. He jerked his head up, staring at Amber, shock written all over his face. “What did you say? Five million dollars?!
Amber hesitated for a split second, a flicker of regret in her eyes, but she quickly collected herself. She’d kept this from Bruno because she was afraid he’d never let go of Lina otherwise. But now that Lina was gone, what difference did it make if he knew? Maybe he’d finally see her true colors. After all, if Lina left for money, there was nothing worth holding onto.5
So Amber told him everything.
“I met her last week and offered her five million to walk away from you. Honestly, I thought she’d argue, maybe try to get more out of you, but she just took the check and promised she’d be gone in a week. Looks like she kept her promise.”
Bruno never imagined this would be the answer.
His eyes burned, and he blinked rapidly, trying to hold back the tears. His chest ached, tight with pain.
He gritted his teeth, refusing to believe Amber. He looked at her, eyes red, desperate for one last bit of hope. “You forced her to leave, didn’t you? She didn’t want to go, right?”
But Amber only shook her head, completely unfazed. “Why would I lie? She took the money and left. That’s all there is.”
“She’s just another woman who cares more about money t Kylie soon. That’s where your focus should be.”

Out of the comer of his eye, Bruno spotted his phone on the table. Like it was his last hope, he grabbed it, scrolled through his contacts, and found the number ho’d been trying so hard to ignore. He hit call
The phone rang and rang, the dial tone cold and endless, Finally, an automated voice told him the call couldn’t go through, then hung up. He tried again, but this time, the line wouldn’t even connect.
He stared at the screen, not wanting to believe it.
Had she blocked him?
Bruno couldn’t remember when Amber left. He just sat there in the living room, staring at the front door, refusing to move.
