Chapter 8
When I got better, I told Mom that I wanted to collect the evidence of what they had done to me.
Mom nodded. But when she looked out the window, she wavered.
I followed her gaze and saw a little figure outside the estate.
My heart skipped a beat. Then, I felt annoyed.
Hadn’t I made myself clear? I closed the curtain to give myself some
peace.
Mom glanced at me. “It’s chilly outside. Don’t you go out to see him?”
I shook my head, but I was afraid that Mom would have a problem. After all, Alaric was her grandson.
“Mom, do you think I’m cruel?”
Mom shook her head. “You are my child. I respect your decision.”
I felt warm.
As people said, one could always be a kid in front of one’s mom.
I ignored Alaric.
If he really loved me, why did he help Antonio kidnap me?
In the hospital the other day, I already decided to cut all ties with Alaric.
What he had done killed my love for him bit by bit.

Besides, he would leave if he thought it was too cold to bear.
The sun was going down. I had to go to the rehabilitation center for physiotherapy.
But when I opened the gate, I heard a faint voice.
“Mom…”
I turned around. Alaric was still there, shaking with a pale face.

pretended not to notice that. “I told you I’m not your mom. I don’t have a kid like you.”
Alaric wobbled. He was cold, and his heart ached.
He thought that I would be touched, so he refused to leave.
But when he saw my indifference, he thought that I meant it when I said I didn’t want him anymore.
It was too much for a 5–year–old kid, so he didn’t dare to call me Mom
again.
He sobbed, “Grace… I know I was wrong… I shouldn’t have helped Dad lie to you!”
I got in the car and called Antonio, which I hadn’t done for a long time.
He was delighted. “Grace, you’re calling me. You……. I…….”
I felt impatient. “Go to my place to take your son back. I can’t believe you sent him over to make me feel pitiful.”
He explained, “No… I didn’t…”

I interrupted, “All right, your son could die in the cold. If you don’t pick him up, I’ll call the police. You two leave me alone!”
Then, I hung up and told the driver to go.
The driver managed to say in my language, “Ms. Parrish, that kid is running after us.”
Through the rearview mirror, I saw Alaric stumble over. Because he was too young and too cold, he fell every few steps.
“Mom, don’t leave me!”
With tears, he stood up again and didn’t give up.
He was scared. He had dreamed of me leaving him, and it was happening.
His knees were injured, but I still didn’t stop for him.
He bawled on the ground. Soon, Antonio came and helped him up.
Alaric punched Antonio on the body several times. “Mom doesn’t want me anymore. It’s all your fault. Dad, please go ask for Mom’s forgiveness. Dad, please.”
Alaric kept calling Mom even though his voice cracked.
Antonio listened ashen–faced to it.
Antonio thought, “I can kneel and beg Grace if she will forgive me. But I know she’ll never do that.”
