The words fell like thunder, quiet but earth–shattering *
My parents froze, their greedy fantasies shattering in an instant. Panic flared in their eyes.
Mary stared at the corpse like it was a ghost come to claim her soul. Her legs buckled slightly, and her lips trembled, unable to form a
word
Then, after a beat of stunned silence, my father blurted out, desperate to regain control.
*7–This is just some corpse! Who knows who she is? It has nothing to do with Mrs. Jacobson!“%
“Yes!” my mother jumped in, eyes darting wildly. “Mr. Jacobson, everyone knows Mrs. Jacobson is beautiful and elegant–how could this bloody, battered corpse be her?“D
Just then, Wallace’s housekeeper stepped forward, his eyes red with grief.”
“You think we wouldn’t recognize our own madam?” he snapped. Then, pointing to the body, he said, voice breaking,
“I’ve cared for her every day. She has a red birthmark behind her left ear. I saw it with my own eyes–this is the real Mrs. Jacobson!“} Mary flinched, her whole body shaking. The walls of her delusion were crashing down around her.”
But then-
Slap.
The sound cracked through the room. Wallace had struck the housekeeper across the face.
The housekeeper stared at him, stunned.
Wallace’s voice was icy calm.
“Shut up. Don’t shout in front of my wife.”§
He turned slowly toward Mary, and in that instant, his gaze softened–chillingly so.
As if nothing had happened, his expression filled with a twisted tenderness.
“My wife is right here,” he said gently, brushing a strand of hair from Mary’s face. “Why are you all still making a scene? What if you frighten her?“&
His voice was featherlight, almost loving.
It was the calm before the storm.
Wallace’s response was so gentle–too gentle–that it sent a chill down my spine.
It defied every expectation.R
This was the man known across the industry for his ruthless precision. He’d built his empire by crushing competitors, both in broad daylight and from the shadows. No deception ever escaped his eyes. No enemy walked away unscathed.
And yet, he looked at Mary… as if she were his whole world.”
My parents‘ lie was so poorly constructed, so thinly veiled, even a bystander could see through it. The housekeeper certainly had. And Wallace? The richest man in the city, a seasoned strategist who loved his wife like his own soul?!
There’s no way–no way–he wouldn’t recognize Veronica.
But before I could process more, he reached out and softly stroked Mary’s cheek, his voice like a lullaby laced with something darker.} “Veronica, I finally found you,” he said with such tenderness it made my skin crawl
“Thank God… you’re alright.”}
Mary froze.
But only for a moment. Then she slipped effortlessly into character, her voice feeble, her body swaying weakly into his arms. “Wallace… I’ve just been so tired lately. Maybe I collapsed from exhaustion. Luckily, someone kind helped me…”
Wallace nodded gently, holding her like she was made of glass.
Then, as if everything had been resolved, he took a black card from his coat and handed it to my parents with a faint smile. “Thank you for saving my wife. There’s ten million in this card. Consider it a small token of appreciation.“}
My parents‘ eyes lit up like lottery winners.
They bent and bowed, almost tripping over their own gratitude.}]
“Oh, no need! It was our duty, of course!” my father gushed.
“Mr. Jacobson is too generous!” my mother added, even as she was already clutching the card with both hands.
Arid then, without a flicker of emotion, Wallace turned to the bloodied corpse on the stretcher.
His tone became ice.
“Throw this thing in the mass grave. I don’t want my wife’s eyes soiled.”
He didn’t even glance twice.}
As if the woman he once cherished–now broken and lifeless–was no more than discarded garbage.
Then he wrapped his arm around Mary and turned to leave, face filled with gentle concern.
The others followed silently. In less than a minute, the house was empty again.”

He had to know!!
He didn’t just stumble across Huaijin’s body–he brought it here. He’d already investigated everything.
So why why accept Mary?%
The calmness he displayed didn’t soothe me. It unsettled me more than any outburst ever could. There was a storm beneath that still surface. One that hadn’t broken yet.
But my parents, in their greed and ignorance, were too blinded to see it.”
They danced through the living room like fools celebrating a festival.
My mother clutched the black card to her chest and sighed with glee.”
“That rich man is even more gullible than I thought! A few sweet words, and he just walked off with our daughter.“}
My father laughed and wiped imaginary sweat from his brow.
“When he walked in with that corpse, I thought we were finished. But thank God for my quick thinking. I sold the lie in three seconds flat!“>
He held the card up like a trophy.
“Who knew ten million would come this easy? At this rate, Mary will have the entire Huo fortune wrapped around her little finger!“}
I couldn’t stay silent.
“Don’t celebrate just yet,” I said coldly. “Nothing about this is as simple as you think.“}
“The housekeeper saw through her instantly. Do you really believe Wallace didn’t?“}
They paused–just for a moment–but the warning didn’t sink in.
“Shut your mouth!” my father suddenly roared, slamming the table.
“You always find a way to ruin the mood. You just can’t stand to see us succeed!”
He pointed a shaking finger at me.
“This money has nothing to do with you. Your mother and I earned it. Don’t even think about touching a cent!“}
“Exactly,” my mother sneered. “With a face like yours, no wonder your life’s full of bad luck!“}
“You were born to be poor!“>
