Chapter 16
Maverick nodded at Bella: “There are many photos of Mommy there.”
“Go, see Mommy.”
Bella reached out and wrapped her arms around Maverick’s neck.
On the way back to this house, I thought about many things.
Or maybe I thought about nothing at all, just fragments of past memories flashing through my mind.
When I saw everything familiar again, I felt my soul trembling.
Maverick walked ahead carrying Bella.
“Your mommy was called Paisley. When she first came here, she was much older than you.
He started talking from the entrance, continuing as they went in.
“Paisley would sit on the shoe–changing stool by the door waiting for me to come home.”
“If I came back too late, she’d fall asleep on the sofa, then act spoiled wanting me to carry her to bed.”
“Sometimes there would be opened snacks left on the coffee table.”
“The TV would still be playing a movie, but she’d already gone back to bed.”
And now, these places were filled with my photographs.
Bella listened very seriously, staring at me in those photos.
In the pictures, my age and dress varied.
My expressions weren’t all happy either.
But they were all things Bella had never seen.
Just a few steps into the kitchen, Maverick turned to look toward the kitchen doorway.
Our gazes collided, and I suddenly stopped in my tracks outside the door.
In a daze, the person before me overlapped with the person in my memory.
“Every time I turn around here, I’d always see Paisley.”
“I’d come to the kitchen to cook, and she’d always follow behind me to the doorway.”
“At first she was afraid of being alone, later she was eager to see what food I was making.”
“I’d always cut her some apple or wash a tomato, coaxing her to wait at the dining table.”
Maverick’s eyes didn’t reflect my image.
But I just knew–he saw me.
Though not the me standing before him.

But Bella’s gaze wasn’t focused, her expression somewhat confused.
She even stretched her neck to look around.
“Mommy… didn’t come.” Her voice drooped.
“Mommy is here… My Bella, Mommy is here.”
I suppressed the tightness in my chest, but my throat was choked again.
Maverick’s breathing tightened, pausing several times before heavily exhaling.
He carried Bella toward the tatami by the balcony.
Then he placed Bella on the tatami, holding her as they looked at the sky outside the window.
“What color is the sky?” Maverick’s voice was very soft.
“Sky blue.”
My murmured voice overlapped with Bella’s answer.
“What you see is the same as what Mommy saw.”
Maverick looked seriously into Bella’s eyes as he spoke.
Bella looked at Maverick, then at the sky outside the window.
“Bella, we all live under the same sky.”
Maverick looked at Bella, speaking earnestly.
Bella didn’t respond, just looked up at the window.
“How many years has it been, Maverick. Even your words haven’t changed.”
I looked at Maverick, examining him carefully.
“Maverick, you really haven’t changed inside or out.”
I reached out to trace his features in the empty air.
“Maverick, I think I miss you a little again.”
Though he was right in front of me, we were destined never to meet again.
This step–we had missed it for too long, too far.
I floated onto the tatami, virtually embracing Bella, looking up at the sky I had gazed at countless times here.
Suddenly, Bella turned around, looking at Maverick.
“Here, here, Mommy is here.”
My heart jumped, and I looked at Bella in surprise.
Maverick’s expression was peaceful, his face showing a gentle smile.
Maverick smiled and patted Bella’s head.
