Mom was dead.
I found out when I heard the adults talking.
I didn’t know what “dead” meant.
I asked the adults, but they just shook their heads. Some of them even cried.
I went to ask Dad again.
Dad stood beside Mom, looking at her motionless.
A police officer told Dad, “Time of death was around 10 PM the night before last. Preliminary findings rule out homicide. The exact cause of death awaits forensic
examination.”
Dad said, “When I came back yesterday morning, she was fine.”

I told Dad, “Daddy, when you came back yesterday, Mommy was already sick. I called her for a long time, but she wouldn’t wake up.”
Everyone looked at me. Dad looked at me too. “What did you say?”
“Yesterday when you came back, I wanted to tell you Mommy was sick, but you left, and I couldn’t catch you.”
“I fed Mommy medicine, but she kept sleeping.”
“Daddy, when will Mommy wake up?”
Dad didn’t answer me. He swayed slightly, then bent over to look at Mom: “You were always fine, you never got sick. You… you’re sick. We’re going to see a doctor.”
He suddenly picked Mom up and started walking out.
