After Dad dropped us off, he was going back to his office.
Mom said to Dad, “Today was the happiest day of my life.”
Then she stood on her tiptoes and kissed Dad. “Julian, thank you.”
Dad looked down at her, his long eyelashes trembling slightly. His lips moved, as if he wanted to say something to Mom.
Mom also looked at him, waiting for him to speak.
In the end, Mom spoke first: “But, I still won’t divorce you.”
“Not even if I die.”
She said it with a smile, then closed the door on Dad.
Dad was angry outside the door. Inside, she was smiling through her tears.
This was their last argument.
Their last, goodbye.
