Chapter 6
“I was the one who was trafficked! You’re making a mistake!”
She thrashed, wincing as the movement aggravated her wounds. My parents immediately stepped in, shielding her protectively.
“Officer, there must be some misunderstanding!” my mother pleaded. “Our daughter was a victim! She was taken ten years ago! She was beaten half to death when we found her- you saw it yourselves!”
The officer’s expression darkened.
“She was beaten because she poisoned four members of the Conrad Family,” he stated coldly. “By the time they arrived at the hospital, they had missed the critical window for gastric lavage. After two days of attempted resuscitation, the doctors have just confirmed… they are most likely beyond saving.”
Silence.
My parents stiffened, horror twisting their faces. Kathy gasped, her body trembling.
“What?!”
The officer exhaled heavily.
“Daryl is already showing signs of organ failure. The other three remain in comas, but the prognosis is grim.”
Kathy’s breath came in sharp, panicked bursts. Her lips parted as if to deny it, but no sound
came out.
“It’s not me!” she finally shrieked. “I didn’t poison anyone! Mom, Dad, you have to believe
me!”
My parents clutched her tightly, their desperate gazes turning to the officer.
“Our daughter has always been kind. She would never–never–do such a thing!” my father
insisted.
The officer gave a curt nod to the investigators behind him.
“The law deals in evidence, not emotions. Please cooperate with the investigation.”
Kathy fought against the officers as they moved in, but their grip was firm.
Then came the final blow.
A forensic investigator stepped forward. “We found pesticide residue under her fingernails,” he reported. “Traces of alcohol, too–consistent with the poisoned wine.”
My parents‘ faces went slack, disbelief clouding their eyes.
Still, they clung to their last hope.
“Our daughter has suffered so much! Maybe she acted out of resentment,” my mother reasoned, voice breaking. “You can’t just convict her for this!”
Kathy’s stunned expression twisted into something furious, something venomous.

Realization struck her, and her eyes locked onto mine with blazing hatred.
“It’s you!” she shrieked. “You scheming bitch–you set me up!”
Feigning terror, I staggered back, my hands trembling. Tears welled in my eyes, my voice quivering.
“Sister, how can you say that?” I whimpered. “You’re the one who poisoned them! Why are you blaming me?”
I turned to my parents, my expression desperate.
“Sister, I was so happy to finally find you! I begged Mom and Dad to keep searching all these years! Why would I ever hurt you?”
Kathy let out a scream of pure rage and lunged at me, only to be restrained.
My mother burst into fresh sobs, clinging to her tightly.
“Kathy, your sister never gave up on you! She spent ten years helping us search for you! How could you say such things?!”
