Megan’s POV
I stared at the text from my father.”
It’s about your sister.
I didn’t reply.
Thirty–five minutes later, I was pulling through the gates of the Sage estate. Same towering walls. Same perfect lawn. Same quiet pressure sitting on my chest.
The doors were already open. My mother stood in the foyer, arms crossed, expression unreadable.}
“You took your time,” she said.
“I didn’t run,” I replied, brushing past her.”
My father was waiting in the living room, standing now instead of sitting. That alone told me something was off.
“She’s in her room,” he said before I could ask.
“What happened?”
“Something about a news article,” he muttered. “She’s… emotional.“”
I didn’t move. “And this required a family intervention?“{
“It’s more than just one article,” my mother said. “She hasn’t spoken to anyone. She won’t eat. And she keeps screaming your
name.”
I froze.
My father shifted uncomfortably. “She saw the rumors.“}
“Which ones?”
He gave me a tired look. “The pregnancy. You and Elijah.”
My stomach turned.
“I didn’t plant that story,” I said.
“We didn’t think you did,” my mother replied. “But Mellan… she thinks you’re sleeping with him.”
1 exhaled slowly.
“And what do you want me to do?“\
“Talk to her,” my father said. “Before she burns down what little we have left.”
I climbed into her room. I didn’t knock. I just opened the door.
Mellan was on the floor in her sweatpants, oversized hoodie, mascara streaks dried across her cheeks. The TV was on, volume muted.[
The news headline still scrolled across the bottom: “Rumors swirl around Sage twin and elite attorney Elijah Vale.”
She turned to face me.
“Well. There she is.”
I shut the door. They asked me to come.”
“Of course they did,” she said, her voice low and mocking. “Golden girl to the rescue.”
“You think I wanted that article out there?” I snapped.
“You didn’t stop it,” she shot back. “You didn’t deny it. You didn’t even flinch.”
“Because it’s not true.”
“But you want it to be.”
Silence.
“You want him,” she said, standing now. “Don’t lie. You’ve always wanted what I had. Jaxon. The name. And now Elijah?”
I stared at her. “You left Elijah. Years ago.”
“He was still mine,” she spat. “Even after we ended. You don’t get it. He loved me first.”
“Then why did he walk away?“!
Her face twisted. “Because I wasn’t pathetic enough for him to fix.“N
“That’s not it,” I said. “You lied to him. Just like you lied to everyone.“}
She lunged for her phone, scrolled frantically, then shoved it in my face. “You see this? ‘Sources say Megan is Vale’s child.’ Do you know how that makes me look?“}

“Like someone who should’ve stayed out of my business,” I said, swatting the phone away.
Mellan laughed bitterly. “It should be me. I should be the one at his side right now, not you. Not the forgotten one. Not the placeholder.”
I stepped forward. “I didn’t steal Elijah. I didn’t chase him. And if he ever loved you, Mellan? He doesn’t anymore.”
“You think you’re better than me now?”
“No,” I said. “I think I’m finally done pretending we were ever equals.“}
That hit. I saw it land in her eyes. The fake confidence cracked.”
“You’re still the same nobody,” she said through clenched teeth.”
“Then why are you so afraid of losing to me?”
She threw her phone. It hit the wall and shattered.}
Then she lunged.
Nails slashed the air. I caught her wrist before she could strike. She screamed, high, unhinged. I shoved her back hard. She stumbled but didn’t fall.
“You were always the backup plan!” she shouted. “They only picked you because I said no!“\
“And now you’re in my shadow,” I said, voice low. “How does it feel?“}
She ran at me.<
grabbed her by the arms, slammed her into the vanity. We struggled. She yanked my hair. I slapped her hand away. She pushed. I pushed harder.<
“Stop pretending you’ve changed!” she shrieked.E
“I didn’t change,” I said through clenched teeth. “I decided. I decided I didn’t want to be like you.“”
Finally, I shoved her off me.\
She fell back, landing against the bed. Winded. Messy. Done.
She didn’t try to stand again.[
“I hate you,” she said, breathless.
“I know,” I said. “You always have.“[
I left her there. On the floor. In her chaos.
I walked out of that room without looking back.
The wind hit my face like ice.[
And standing near the gate, phone in hand, was Elijah.
He looked up when he saw me. Eyes calm, unreadable.,
“Didn’t expect you here,” I said.
“I have something to tell you.”
I stayed quiet, my hands still shaking.
“You alright?” he asked, watching me carefully.”
