Megan’s POV
Chapter 6
The headlights blinded the men, forcing them to freeze like animals caught mid–hunt.
The screeching tires cut across the night, jolting the silence.\
The driver’s door flew open. Footsteps were fast, hard.”
“Get the hell away from her!” a familiar voice barked.
I blinked, half–blinded by the light.”
Jaxon.
The three men hesitated for a moment too long. Jaxon didn’t. He lunged at the closest one, grabbing the collar of his jacket and shoving him back.
“Touch her again and I swear to God–“\
“Alright, alright!” the second guy yelled, backing away. “We were just following orders. We didn’t know she was taken.”
The third one chuckled nervously. “Was just messin‘ around, man. Relax.“”
Jaxon didn’t.
He shoved the first man again. “Get out of here. Now.”
They scattered, muttering curses as they disappeared into the dark.
For a moment, all I could hear was the hum of the car’s engine and the shallow rasp
Then Jaxon turned to me.\
“Megan-” he said, voice rough, “are you okay?”
I didn’t answer.
I stepped back, away from him.

breath.
He looked worse than I remembered. Sleepless eyes. Jaw tense. Still wearing the same dress shirt from the party, but now it was half–untucked, wrinkled, undone at the collar.
“Why are you here?” I asked.\
He ran a hand through his hair. “I was following you. 1-1 just had a feeling.“”
“Don’t lie to me, Jaxon.”
He paused. “I didn’t know what would happen. But Jane mentioned something earlier. She said you were ‘going to have a bad night‘ and… the way she said it didn’t sit right.”
“And you didn’t say anything?” I snapped.<
“I tried to get her to tell me more, but she just brushed me off.” His voice cracked. “I didn’t know it was going to be like this. I swear.“[
I stared at him, my heart still thudding in my chest. “You followed me because you felt guilty. Not because you care.”
He didn’t deny it.
“I didn’t want it to go this far,” he said quietly. “None of this. Not like this.“}
“But you let it happen,” I said. “You stood by while they planned to destroy me.”
“Megan…”
I
“You watched them lie about me. Humiliate me. Frame me. And you said nothing. Because you were part of the plan.”
He looked away, jaw clenched. “I didn’t think they’d actually go through with it. I thought they were bluffing.“”
I looked at him for the first time. “You let it happen, Jaxon. Don’t act surprised now.”
We stood in silence.
Finally, he spoke. “I’m sorry.”
It hung in the air, empty. Too late. I can feel my heart breaking from what he said.”
“Was three years not enough for you to love me back?” my voice cracked before I even knew it.”
I immediately cleared my voice and wiped the tears escaping from my eyes. I refuse to show any weakness in front of anyone again.B
He opened his mouth, then closed it.”
“Get in,” he said quietly. “I’ll take you home.”
I didn’t want to. But my hands were still shaking, and the cold had started to bite into my skin. I didn’t want to owe him anything. But I also didn’t want to be here a second longer.”
So I got in the car.
The drive was quiet.
No music. No words.
When he pulled up to the curb outside my apartment, he didn’t try to get out. He just sat there gripping the wheel.
“I never planned it to be this way,” he said finally.
“But it is,” I replied, opening the door. “And now you live with it.“}
I shut the door before he could say another word.”
Three days later, I wasn’t sleeping much.”
Between the press, the photo leaks, the damage control, I was surviving on black coffee and quiet rage.
Elijah and I had been working closely. Strategizing. Planning. Filing paperwork. It wasn’t friendship, not yet but it was trust.
I hadn’t told him everything.[
Not about Jaxon showing up. Not about the tire. Not about the way my hands still shook when I heard footsteps behind me at night.
Because I couldn’t afford to be the vulnerable twin anymore.
And I wouldn’t give them that satisfaction.

That night, my phone buzzed.
A new headline:
“Megan Sage Pregnant? Late Night Meeting with Divorce Lawyer Fuels Speculation”
I threw the phone across the couch. “Jane,” I whispered. “Of course.”
She wasn’t done. Not even close.
And neither was 1.0
The phone buzzed again.”

Mom: Come home. Now.
i stared at the screen. My hands still.
Then a second message came in, seconds later.
From my father.
Dad: It’s about your sister.
