Chapter 8
Keon clutched his head, breaking down completely. That single slap he gave himself at the event? Nowhere near enough.
He started slapping his own cheeks until they turned burning red. His sobs turned into choked gasps. Guilt was drowning him.
Desperate, he fumbled for his phone, scrolling through his contacts. But no matter how many times he looked, the only number he wanted to call–the only one that mattered- was Kelsey’s.
And she would never pick up.
His hands shook as he dialed the next best option.
Kelsey’s father.
The phone barely rang before it connected, but Keon was already sweating, his grip nearly slipping.
“Sir, I… I’d like to see Kesley.”

When my dad got the call, we were in the middle of dinner. He only glanced at me once, but that was enough to make my stomach drop. A terrible feeling clawed its way into my
chest.
Without a word, he got up, walked to the balcony and shut the glass door behind him. Not that I couldn’t hear a thing he said, my hearing was too good for that.
His voice was ice. “You have no right to call me that. Did you not get the divorce papers? There is nothing left to discuss. You will never see Kelsey again.”
Silence.
Then, his words got sharper–louder, “Are you even a man? Haven’t you hurt her enough?”
A pause.
“Show your face near her again and I swear to God, I’ll break your damn legs. Now get
lost.”
Soon after, dad walked back in like nothing happened.
I pretended I hadn’t heard a thing. He pretended he hadn’t answered. Thus, we kept eating our dinner.
After returning home, I started learning the ins and outs of running the family business from the ground up, following my father’s lead.
Back when I was with Keon, my world revolved around one thing–how to be a good wife, how to manage a household.
Now, I realized how small that world had been. I was never meant to be confined to the tiny space orbiting around a man.

Keon was the past. I didn’t think about him anymore. I wouldn’t waste another second on him.
We had planned to treat his call like a minor nuisance, something to forget. But the next day, Keon was standing in front of my father’s car, blocking our way.
“Kesley, I was wrong–I know I was wrong. Please, just let me see you! I won’t leave until you do!”
My father clenched his fists, furious, already reaching for the door handle to get out and curse him to hell.
I stopped him with a shake of my head.
“Dad, don’t bother. Guys like him? The more attention you give them, the more they think. they still have a chance. The best thing to do is ignore him.”
I turned to the driver. “Just drive.”
Just as I expected, the man who claimed he would never move, the man who swore he would die before stepping aside–scrambled out of the way the second the car inched forward.
I let out a cold laugh.
Love me so much he’d die just to see me? Please. Not a chance.
Keon showed up every day, blocking our car. When that didn’t work, he started ambushing me at my office.
Security had to pin him to the ground more than once, but even then, he’d crane his neck, shouting my name like a lunatic.
For the first time, I realized just how annoying this man was. The moment he saw me approaching, his eyes lit up with desperate hope.
“Kesley! Are you finally giving me a chance?”
My father’s voice was firm, warning me like it was the last time he ever would.
“If you take him back, don’t bother calling yourself my daughter.”
I laughed. “Relax, Dad. I was blind before, not brain–dead. He’s just so damn persistent–l want to make sure he disappears for good.”
I pulled Keon into a private meeting room, half–afraid he’d start spewing more nonsense in front of a crowd,
“What do you even want to say? I don’t see the point in us talking.”
Keon’s face lit up with a pitiful smile, full of forced charm.
“Kesley, I just need you to understand!”
“Kizzie and I–we grew up together. We promised we’d always put her first. But then I married you… and I felt guilty. That’s why I kept siding with her. But I get it now. I love you. I don’t care about her anymore!”
He took a deep breath, his voice shaking like he thought this next part would move me.

“And the paternity test–it’s my child! You don’t know how happy I was! That’s when I realized–I’ve always wanted to have a child with you.”
“When I thought there was even a chance you were carrying another man’s baby, I nearly lost my mind with jealousy!”
