Chapter 2 Disdain
He said, “Harper, I haven’t eaten yet…”
I asked puzzled, “Then cook something. Why are you telling me?”
Felix clearly expected me to be like before, always having dinner ready for him no matter what.
Holding Ashley, I turned and said to him, “Or you can order takeout.”

Ashley always falls asleep quickly. I received a message from my father, Bob Wilson.
[Harper, I’ve asked you so many times but you’ve always refused to come back and manage the company. I’m getting old. Can you help me?]
[I know you want to protect Felix’s pride by not letting him know about our family’s financial situation, but you’re my only child. My company can only go to you.]
I felt a pang of guilt. My parents have always cared for me, yet I was willing to refuse helping them for Felix’s sake.
[Dad, I’ve decided to manage your company.]

My father’s company, Wilson Group, has invested in many businesses domestically. My parents had asked me multiple times to take over Wilson Group, but out of concern for Felix’s fragile ego, I had always refused them.Felix and I were college classmates. He was the only person from his village to attend university. He worked incredibly hard and truly achieved quite a lot. But what he didn’t know was that these achievements were largely due to my quiet support behind the scenes. As someone from a rural background, Felix struggled to compete against those with power and influence. On my birthday, Felix waited for three hours in the snow. When he saw me, he immediately dropped to one knee and asked, “Harper, will you marry me?”
Felix’s cheeks were red from the cold, but his eyes were bright as they reflected my image.
My heart raced, and my hands nervously clutched the hem of
my
clothes.
Felix moved closer, kissed my face, and then whispered in my ear, “Harper, will you be my wife?”
“Yes,” I blurted out.
He knew I would say yes. Everyone in college knew I loved him.
And just like that, we got married soon after.
After our marriage, Felix wouldn’t let me work, claiming he could support me. Whenever I mentioned wanting to work, Felix would get drunk and ask, “Harper, do you look down on me too?
Have you always looked down on me because I’m from the countryside?”
I knew he had strong pride, but I never confronted his insecurities.
I believed I was a good wife.

Bob seemed to sense something was wrong and messaged me: “Are you and Felix doing okay?”
I didn’t respond. Shortly after, he said: “Baby, we’ll support whatever decision you make.”
Felix came to the bedroom after dinner. Turning away from him, I said, “Ashley needs milk in the middle of the night. You should sleep in the guest room.”
In the past, I would always stay close to Felix after his business trips, not wanting to leave his side.
But now I couldn’t even bear to look at him.
To my surprise, Felix erupted in anger, completely disregarding our sleeping Ashley: “Harper, enough! I’ve already explained to you that Kelly and I went on a business trip together a week ago. It was a work arrangement I couldn’t refuse.”
“If I don’t work, you and Ashley can’t survive. We need money. How long are you going to be angry?”
“You’re no help with my work; you’re nothing but a burden.”

If Felix hadn’t reminded me, I would have almost forgotten how stupid I am.
