Chapter 255
Lucia suddenly felt a cold sweat trickle down her back. With her neck locked tight, she slowly twisted around, and there was Yann, standing right behind
her with that stone–cold handsome face and a presence that could freeze the whole arch
“Oh. W when did you get here?” she asked, forcing a smile that looked more like a grimace
Yann adjusted his cuffs and replied evenly. “When you were telling my wife to distance herself from me.”
Lucia swallowed hard and avoided his gaze, trying to change the subject. “Margot just mentioned a charity gals. If you’re not going, maybe let Logan attend in your place.”
Yann didn’t respond. He simply stared her down with a suffocating internity
Lucia shot a quick glance at Audrey, silently pleading for backup.
Lucia thought anxiously, I’m her mother, for God’s sake, Blood is thicker than water, isn’t? Last time I barely criticized Audrey my authority over the household
“If she doesn’t speak up for me now, who knows what kind of disaster I’m in for.”
Yann stripped me of
Audrey stepped up beside Yann and took his hand. “Hey, don’t worry. You’re handsome and loaded. I would have to be crazy to want to walk away from you. Let’s not do that whole cat and–mouse drama, okay?”
Lucia gritted her teeth so hard she could taste blood in her mouth, thinking. This damn girl. This is her idea of helping me? She’s just making things
worse for met
just afraid I’ll do something reckless,
Yann glanced down at Audrey, who flashed him a dazzling smile, her clear eyes twinkling. “Oh, Mrs. Lucia Winifred is ju so she’s putting me to the test. She’s not actually trying to break us up.”
“That’s right” Lucia chimed in quickly. “Audrey has always been stubborn and impulsive. Last time she only told me she got married after the fact, and that marriage barely lasted two years before it ended. I’m just worried she’s acting out of spite again-”
She couldn’t bring herself to finish, because Yann was looking at her with his icy, razor–sharp gaze
Audrey held back a mocking smirk and thought, Just how badly does she not want me to marry Yann, huh? She just had to bring up my past marriage in front of him.
“It’s not like ever wanted to hide my past, but her dragging it out on purpose in front of him is something else entirely
Right then, Margot stepped out from the side and stopped in front of them. “Who got married before this?”
Lucia looked troubled, her eyes shitting between Yann and Audrey She wore the kind of conflicted expression that said she wanted to speak but was scared of saying the wrong thing
Margot’s voice turned cold as she asked, “What, I’m not allowed to know?”
Yann was just about to respond when Audrey squeezed his hand.
She smiled and said, “Mrs. Whitlow, before Mrs. Lucia Winifred married Mr. Logan Winifred, she had already been married once. She told me it was a spur of the moment thing
“She thought the guy would take care of her for the rest of her life, but it turned out to be a huge mistake. Good thing she got out when she did, or she wouldn’t have what she has now.”
Lucia’s head snapped toward Audrey in disbelief and then frantically turned to Margot
Lucia started to explain, but Margot cut her aff, asking. “I thought you married my brother because you were widowed?”

Chapter 255
“Yes, he passed away. Lucia replied quickly, throwing desperate glances at Audrey.
Audrey caught the implication immediately. Her expression sharpened as she asked coolly. “Mrs Lucia Winifred, vime you a
met M. Logan Winifred, or did you become a widow to you could marry him?”
Lucia’s face went pale. “What are you even talking about?” she snapped, halling her fisti so tight her nails nearly pierced her palms. The way her eyes carted around made it clear just how ratlled and uneasy she felt.
Seeing the way she acted, Audrey couldn’t help but have a crazy thought cross her mind
She reflected, ‘Dad spent three years trying to get the workers their wages. He was threatened, harassed, and it never gave up. He always said the money they earned was honest, backbreaking work, and that he had to light for them.
“if he wouldn’t give up fighting for the workers‘ pay, why would he suddenly bet his own life on the chance that some developer would grow a conscience and pay them back in full?”
Audrey suddenly recalled how, after her father died, Yann took her to Logan for help, and at that point, Lucia had been preparing to marry Logan
Audrey pondered, ‘There’s no way they rushed into marriage. They must have been dating for a while. Could it be that Lucia was might cling to her and ruin her reputation, so she laked being a widow?”
husband
Lucia didn’t dare meet her eyes. Flustered, she pointed toward the door and said, “The guests are all gone. I should see them off without waiting for a reply, she turned and left in a hurry.
Margot watched her go before turning back to Audrey and finally fixing her gaze on Yann. “Think it over, will you?”
“Sure,” he replied as he wrapped his hand around Audrey’s cold fingers, his gaze growing more serious
When Margot was gone, Yann lifted Audrey’s chin and saw not just the coldness in her eyes, but the pain she was trying to hide.
Audrey’s eyes flickered as she met his worried gaze, her voice trembling. “You were the one who asked Mr. William to handle my dad’s case. What ready happened back then? Was there anything suspicious?”
She had been competing in the citywide academic tournament when George fell from the construction site. Worried it would affect her performance, the coach didn’t tell her until after the competition was over.
Yann’s broad hand closed gently around Audrey’s shoulder as he replied, “There wasn’t any surveillance on–site, but there was a witness on duty
The witness had seen George ride the up alone. Since George used to be part of the construction
But when he came back with materials, he heard George shout and saw him fall from the upper floor.
On top of that, entry and exit were all monitored by facial recognition, with nothing unusual showing up.
“Besides, Lucia and my dad were vacationing in Nafira back then,” Yann said in a very quiet voice.
the guy hadn’t thought anything of it.
In other words, Lucia couldn’t have been involved. But just one day before Audrey’s competition, while she was at school for classes, Lucia went to see George. Still, nobody knew what the two of them talked about
Tann hadn’t told Audrey any of this. He didn’t want to add fuel to the fire without proof, especially when, at the end of the day, Lucia was the only blood relative Audrey had left.
Audrey’s eyes filled with tears, but she held her bead high, refusing to let them fall. She gripped Yann’s hand, trying her best to smile. “If you’d told me back then, I wouldn’t have mistaken the person who really helped me
Yann held her hand a little tighter and said quietly, “That’s on me.”
