“Is that not Fred? Your ex–husband?” Kayla asked.
Just then, my phone beeped as a notification popped up. I checked it and realized it was from Fred. The text read, “I need to talk to you. It’s urgent!“}]
Reading my expression, Kayla already knew the text was from him.”
“What does he want?” she asked with pure disdain in her voice.
“I don’t know. He only said he needs to talk to me,” I replied.”
I studied his expression, and from our angle, he looked worried.
Instead of going to meet him as he had requested, I dialed his number, and he picked up on the first ring.”
“What do you want to talk about?” I asked in a cold tone.
“Genevieve, I’m sorry,” he apologized.}
Kayla urged me to put him on speakerphone, and I did.
“Your apology is not needed. We are free from each other’s claws now. Let’s move on.““>
I wanted to hang up, but his next words stopped me.}
“Kelvin… he’s dying,” he said.
“What? What happened to him?“>
“I don’t know what happened to him. He just started vomiting two days ago. I thought he’d be okay after seeing a doctor, but…” He broke down in tears.
Never in my life did I think I’d feel pity for Fred, but at this moment, I did.”
My brows furrowed as I tried to figure out if he was lying or not.
“He is such a manipulator!” Kayla sneered.
“Can he lie with his son’s life?” I whispered to her, but she replied loudly.
“Of course he can.“8
He was crying so much. Throughout our seven years of marriage, I’d never seen Fred in such a vulnerable state.
Maybe he’s not lying.
My mind flashed back to how he and his son treated me, and I wanted to hang up on him… but thinking about my stepsister, I hesitated.]
“Nope! Nope! Nope!” Kayla said urgently. “I know that look in your eyes. Don’t you dare do what you’re thinking.“}
“Kayla, Susan was a good sister to me when she was alive. I can’t sit back and watch her only child die.”
“Are you listening to yourself right now? Tell me, are you a doctor? If his son is sick, he should take him to the hospital and not bother you about it,” she said.}
I know she’s right, but we’re talking about a child I practically raised. There’s some sort of motherly affection that has subconsciously formed in my heart for him. That motherly affection won’t allow me to sit back and watch him suffer without getting worried.
“I have to go, Kay.” I pulled out some cash from my bag and dropped it on the table.
“Genevieve!”
“I’ll call you later.” With that, I rushed out of the restaurant.
“Thank you for coming,” Fred said when I reached where he was.
“I’m doing this for Susan,” I replied coldly.
He simply nodded. “Let’s go.” He led the way to his car.
My brows knitted as he drove through the familiar neighborhood. I’d lived seven years in this neighborhood.”
“You said we’re going to see Kelvin at the hospital. Why are we driving towards your home instead?” I asked.
“Kelvin has been in the hospital for two days. I need to get some daily necessities for him,” he explained.
His explanation was reasonable, so I didn’t ask any more questions.N
We soon made it to his house. He parked the car and faced me.}
“I’m sorry, but I’ll have to bother you with something. You raised Kelvin, so you definitely know what he’d like more than I do. Do you mind coming inside to help me pick some things?” he asked.
His voice was so surprisingly polite that I couldn’t help but wonder how he managed to change so drastically within this short period of time. But I didn’t let it bother me. I agreed to help him, and we alighted from the car.
While we were inside, I went straight to Kelvin’s room and began picking some things I knew he would like to have while being in the hospital.
“What do you think of Kelvin’s bed?” Fred asked as he entered the room.
“What? Why are you asking me about Kelvin’s bed?” I asked him back. I was perplexed by his question.

10:07 AM
“You’ll find out soon,” he replied.}
He locked the door, and that’s when it dawned on me that I had voluntarily walked into his trap.}]
“What are you doing? Open the door and let me out!” My voice was shaky as I was panicking.
“Genevieve! Genevieve! I have missed you so dearly. Did you miss me too?“}
His eyes lustfully trailed my body, and he licked his lips hungrily. I didn’t have to guess to know what was running through his mind.”
“Isn’t it a shame that you were married to me for seven years but couldn’t give me a child?”
I took cautious steps back as he approached.
“You were married to me for seven years, and you want me to believe that in those seven years, you never got pregnant?” he shook his head.”
“What do you mean? You never wanted a child with me,” I argued.“]
“Is that what you think?” He nodded as he clenched his jaw. “Well, now I want a child with you!“}
He pushed me on the bed before I could react.
“Don’t do this, Fred,” I pleaded as he began unbuckling his belt. “You can’t do this.“}
A smirk appeared on his face. “Watch me do it!”
I moved backwards as he climbed onto the bed and began approaching me slowly.“]
“Stop this or I’ll scream for help!”
He laughed at my words. “Scream all you want. No one can save you today!“}]
