Chapter 5
I rolled down the window. “Colin, today is your day. Don’t mess it up.”
He came closer, eyes flickering with something unreadable. “Lucy, I know I said some things in anger that day. But you know how I feel about you. I just didn’t want you using your family’s status to overshadow Denise. If you could tone that down, I swear, I’d treat you just the same as her. Okay?”
He reached for my hand.
But Hunter’s grip was faster, pulling me back. “Fitzwilliam, your bride’s in the car behind you. If you keep dragging this out, you’re going to miss your own wedding.”
His bodyguards had already broken into a sweat, scrambling over to pull Colin back.
“Hey, Colin, please! This isn’t the time. The guests are already waiting at the hotel.”
Colin ground his teeth, pushing the men away. “Get out of my way!”
Then, he turned to Hunter, pointing his finger. “And you, Grosvenor, what gives you the right to go up against me? You think you’re on my level?!”
Hunter didn’t budge. “You’re the one neglecting your own bride to stop my fiancée in the middle of the road. If this gets out, I’ll explain every last word to the Fitzwilliam guests loud and clear.”
The entire procession froze, watching the standoff between the two men.
I finally spoke up, my voice steady. “Colin, Hunter, and I have been in love since we were kids. We’ve been promised to each other for some time now. You’re getting married today. What’s the point in all this?”
Colin’s eyes were bloodshot. “I told you that I’ve already changed my mind. I want to marry you. Lucy, don’t go with that asshole!”
“If you want,” he said, looking at Hunter, desperation spilling from his lips, “we can switch brides right now. Would that make you stay?”
Behind him, Denise had heard everything. She had rushed out of the car in her wedding. dress, veil lifted, and was now standing just a few feet away.
Her face had gone ghostly pale.
“Colin,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “What did you just say? You want to marry Lucy? Then… what am I?”
Denise came rushing over, grabbing Colin’s arm like it was the last thing keeping her grounded.
“Didn’t we agree it was just going to be us? No other women! If you’re marrying her, then what am I supposed to be? Where do I fit in?” Denise cried out.
Colin jerked his arm free, irritation flashing across his face. “We haven’t even had the wedding or signed anything yet. You’ve always been reasonable. Step aside for Lucy, and I promise you won’t be treated unfairly.”

Tears streamed down Denise’s cheeks like shattered pearls. “Colin, were all your promises just lies? Today’s our wedding day. How can you say you want to marry someone else
now?”
“And besides…” she raised her voice, her hands trembling. “We’ve already slept together. I’m pregnant with your child. Are you really going to abandon me and marry someone else?”
The moment those words left her mouth, the crowd watching the Fitzwilliam wedding exploded in commotion.
“What? The Smythe girl is pregnant before marriage? How shameless!”
“She calls herself a proper lady? Even girls from humble families have more self–respect.”
“Announcing a shotgun marriage on the street? Where’s her dignity?”
“She’s ruined the whole Smythe family name. If I were her father, I wouldn’t care if she married into wealth. I’d strangle her myself.”
“The Fitzwilliams are actually going to bring this disgrace into their family? Aren’t they worried about becoming the laughingstock of Harbor City?”
The old women standing beside Belinda, who had come out with Colin to meet the bride, couldn’t hide their horrified expressions.
As the whispers grew louder and nastier, both Colin and Denise heard every vicious word.
Too late, Denise realized the damage her outburst had caused.
Her face drained of color as she stepped back, trembling. “No, that’s not what I meant. I only said those things to stop Colin from marrying Lucy.”
She turned to him with desperation. “You know how much I love you, don’t you?”
I cut in, before Colin could respond, “Colin, I don’t want to marry you. I’m already engaged. Please don’t delay my schedule. My parents are waiting for me at home.”
I turned to the man by my side. “Hunter, let’s go.”
He stepped into the car first and called out calmly to the driver, “Drive.”
With the security team my father had sent leading the way, we passed straight through the wedding convoy and left without looking back.
As I rolled up the car window, I let out a deep breath. This time, I hadn’t married Colin Fitzwilliam.
I clenched my fists, vowing never to let the past tragedy in my past life happen again.
I will protect my family.
Back at the Morgan estate, my mother came out to greet me.
“My poor girl. You’ve been through so much,” she said, pulling me into a hug.
Meanwhile, my father’s expression was cold and furious. “That Fitzwilliam brat thinks he’s some prize! If it weren’t for Belinda pushing Lucy to come to Harbor and the favor we owe them, would I have ever let my daughter be offered as his fiancée?”

Humer stepped forward, apologetic. “Lucy, your father asked me to say we were engaged and to bring you home. Please don’t take it to heart. He just had no other choice.” Grabbing my hand, he asserted, “If we hadn’t done that, your father was afraid Belinda wouldn’t let you go. It was a necessary bluff.”
My dad grumed from the side. “Well, it might not have been such a bad plan. Honestly, I think you two getting married wouldn’t be the worst idea. Who knows if Belinda will try to pull something again? Better to make things official and keep those vultures away.”
My mother nodded. “I think that’s the best plan. You two grew up together.” She looked at me and Hunter and continued, “It’s not like you two are strangers. You know him better than anyone.”
1 looked at my parents, who were alive and well, and at Hunter, who now held half of Lakeside City’s business world in his hands.
My eyes burned with heat.
71 leave my marriage in your hands,” I said softly. “I have no objections.”
My wedding to Hunter was set for three months later. My father was overjoyed, and given his reputation in Lakeside, the house was soon overflowing with gifts and congratulations from all over the city.
