Chapter 13
Evelynne seemed well prepared. She arrived within half an hour, dressed in an extravagant, brightly colored dress and carefully made up.
She curled her lips into a smile and, spotting Carmen, immediately moved close to him.
“Is it true that Liora is dead? I brought flowers to pay my respects.”
Evelynne held out a bouquet of vivid, radiant roses–fiery and beautiful, just like herself at that moment.
Why hadn’t he realized sooner that Evelynne harbored ill intentions? Why had he chosen to believe this she–wolf time and again?
Carmen’s cold gaze fixed on Evelynne’s delicate face, causing her to frown in confusion, cheeks flushed.
“Carmen, why are you staring at me like that? Is there something on my face?”
Even now, she was still pretending.
Carmen sneered.
“Don’t you know better than anyone else whether Liora’s dead?”
Evelynne’s expression flickered, but she quickly masked it with feigned innocence.
“How could I possibly know, Carmen? What are you talking about?”
But Carmen’s eyes remained icy as if watching a joke unfold.
Staring at the face just inches away, he reached out, grabbed Evelynne’s chin, and in the midst of her expectant gaze, delivered a hard slap.
The sharp smack echoed through the room as Evelynne crashed heavily onto the floor. The flowers scattered across the ground. Her pale face flushed deep red and swelled.
She looked up at him, eyes wide with disbelief, voice trembling with tears.
“Carmen, why did you hit me?”
As she spoke, realization dawned on her. Clutching her face, her eyes darkened with resentment.
“I get it now, isn’t it because of Liora? Did she tell you something?”
“No matter what she said, it was all lies! She’s just jealous of me. Haven’t you forgotten, Carmen? That bitch Liora tried to hurt me more than once! Are you really going to believe her, Carmen?”
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she spoke. She was playing the victim like she was suffering the greatest injustice. Little did she know those words only fueled Carmen’s fury.
“Evelynne, you’re asking for death!”
He kicked her while she lay on the floor, sending her crashing into a pillar. Blood trickled from her forehead. Yet she still didn’t understand what had just happened, why Carmen was treating her this way.
It had to be Liora. She had to have done something!
Why did she still haunt them, even after death?
Evelynne’s tear–filled eyes blurred as she crawled to Carmen’s feet, sobbing pitifully, shaking her head.
“Carmen, tell me what I did wrong. I’ll change, I swear. Please don’t believe Liora. She’s dead now. It’s just the two of us from here on.”
But the affection in Carmen’s eyes was gone long ago.
Looking down on her, he threw the evidence–filled documents at her face–proof of all her deeds laid bare.
Evelynne’s face turned ghostly pale. She gripped Carmen’s pant leg tightly, tears flooding her eyes as she stammered out excuses instinctively.
“It’s not like that, Carmen… I had my reasons. Liora provoked me first…”
Her words met only colder dismissal.
Carmen grabbed her chin again, a storm of fury raging in his eyes.
“After everything, you still dare to blame Liora? I trusted you so much, yet you lied to me time and again. Evelynne, you’re unbelievably bold!”

The anger in his voice terrified Evelynne. She broke down sobbing, begging the person in front of her for forgiveness.
But she had forgotten one thing that Carmen was never soft–hearted.
His voice was as cold as ever.
“It’s because I trusted you too much that Liora ended up like this.”
“Do you know where she is now? If you go apologize to her, I’ll forgive you.”
Evelynne stopped crying, a glimmer of hope shining in her eyes.
She knew then she still had a chance!
She had followed Carmen for so long–he couldn’t possibly be indifferent to her. He hated nothing more than to see her cry.
She nodded quickly, a smile creeping into her eyes.
“I’ll go to Liora’s grave right now. I’ll apologize properly.”
Carmen watched her, a dark, cryptic smile curling at the corners of his mouth. His voice came like a whisper from hell.
“No need. She’s right here.”
