Chapter 6
After that, Seraphina got even more shameless,
She started posting stuff on social media with hints, and Alistair was always somewhere in the pictures.
“My upperclassman took me to lunch today, so sweet~”
The photo showed Alistair’s profile in the dining hall.
“He said I look pretty in white dresses, hehe”
A selfie of them together, with her practically pressed up against him.
“Some people don’t appreciate what they have, and deserve to get replaced”
That last one was obviously about me.
When I confronted Alistair about it, he acted like I was making a big deal out of nothing.
“It’s just social media posts. When did you get so paranoid?”
He was sitting at his desk, not even bothering to look up from his computer.
“Paranoid? Alistair, the whole campus is talking about you and Seraphina hooking up!”
My voice came out sharp and ugly, even to my own ears,
He frowned. “People gossip about everything. Seraphina and I are just friends.”
“Just friends? You eat alone together, go to movies alone, you rush over to take care of her in the middle of the night–that’s just friends?”
“She had a high fever and was alone in her dorm. Was I supposed to let her suffer?”
He finally looked up, and I could see the irritation in his eyes.
“Well, what about when I had food poisoning and was getting an IV at the hospital? Where were you?”
Alistair went quiet.
That day, he’d gone to some beauty pageant with Seraphina.
Said he was there to be her cheering section and moral support.
I remember it clearly–I called him fifteen times from that hospital bed, and he didn’t pick up once.
My stomach felt like someone was twisting knives in it. I was sweating through the hospital gown.
The nurse asked if I had any family coming, and I said yes, they’re on their way.
But he never showed up, not even after my IV was finished.
My roommate ended up staying with me and helping me get back to the dorm.
The next day he came to apologize, saying his phone had been on silent so he didn’t hear it.
He brought flowers, said they were to make up for it.

Looking at those flowers, I suddenly felt like laughing.
“Are these left over from the pageant?”
His face changed. “Aurelia, how can you think that?”
“Then tell me where you were last night.”
“I…” He started stumbling over his words. “I was with Seraphina at her competition. It was her first time entering, she was really nervous…”
“So you just dumped your sick girlfriend at the hospital?”
“I didn’t know you were sick!”
“Fifteen missed calls–you couldn’t see those?”
He went silent.
I laughed, but there was nothing funny about it. “Alistair, who matters more to you–me or Seraphina?”
“It’s not about who matters more…”
“It is!” I cut him off. “You chose to be with her instead of me. That’s my answer right there.“.
“Aurelia, stop being so dramatic.”
Dramatic.
Those words hit me like a slap across the face.
So that’s what my hurt feelings were to him. Drama.
But I chose to believe him anyway.
Because I couldn’t bear to lose what we had.
Couldn’t bear to lose the boy who once promised to protect me forever.
Looking back now, I was such an idiot.
Phone on silent?
Then how did he always manage to answer Seraphina’s calls right away?
How did he always know the second she had a fever, or a competition, or was feeling down?
ロ
I was such a joke.
