Chapter 2
The doctor said I was lucky.
“The concentration wasn’t super high–looks like it got diluted somehow. But she’s got severe chemical burns across most of her face. We need to get her into surgery right now.”
Lying on the operating table, listening to the doctors throw around medical terms, I felt completely dead inside.
“She’s so young… only twenty years old…”
“Yeah, prime of her life. What a damn shame.”
“Let’s do everything we can to save her face.”
Twenty years old. The best years of my life.
I closed my eyes, and all I could hear was Alistair’s casual voice echoing in my head.
“That was Seraphina’s idea. She wanted me to play a little prank on you.”
A prank.
Destroying someone’s face–that’s what they call a prank now?
Was my face really worth that little to him?
The surgery went on for six hours.
I was half–conscious the whole time, feeling every single thing the doctors were doing to my face. The anesthesia could only do so much–the pain just wouldn’t go away.
I gritted my teeth and dug my nails deep into my palms, using one kind of pain to fight off another.
When I woke up, my entire face was wrapped in bandages. Only my eyes and mouth were showing.
The hospital room was dead quiet except for the steady beeping of the monitors.
Alistair was sitting beside my bed, his eyes all red and puffy. He looked like he hadn’t slept all night.
“I’m so sorry, Aurelia. I swear I had no idea…”
He reached for my hand. I pulled it away.
It was just a small movement, but it left his hand hanging there in mid–air.
“Alistair.” My voice came out like sandpaper. Every word felt like swallowing broken glass. “How long have we known each other?”
He looked confused, his eyes darting around. “Since we were born, basically. We grew up next door to each other…”
“Twenty years,” I finished for him. “Twenty whole years.”
“So why did you help Seraphina hurt me?”
“I didn’t!” Alistair shot up from his chair so fast it went sliding backward with this awful scraping sound. “I seriously thought it was just a stupid prank! Seraphina… she said she wanted to mess with you a little, make you look bad so I could see what you’re really like…”

Chapter 2
I laughed
The bandages pulled tight against my face and it hurt like hell, but I kept laughing anyway.
It was barely a sound–more like crying than laughing.
*So you just… believed her?”
“You actually thought I had some kind of true colors that needed exposing?”
“You thought I was the kind of person who needed to be “tested“?”
Every question was like a knife cutting through me–and cutting through him too.
