Chapter 10
Seraphina got arrested on assault charges.
But her lawyer showed up to post bail pretty much immediately.
This slick middle–aged guy in an expensive suit–the kind who probably charges five hundred bucks an hour.
Their story was that Seraphina was just trying to pull a harmless prank and had no idea the concentration would cause this much damage.
Plus, since Alistair was the one who actually handed me the bottle, Seraphina never technically touched me herself.
“My client deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and is prepared to cover all medical expenses,” the lawyer said, adjusting his glasses like this was just another Tuesday.
“However, this was clearly just a prank gone wrong, with no malicious intent.”
A prank?
Buying sulfuric acid and diluting it to just the right strength to destroy someone’s face–that’s a prank?
I was shaking with rage, and it made all my wounds throb.
Is this what rich people do? Take something that’s obviously attempted murder and call it an accident?
Something that was obviously planned out becomes “a moment of poor judgment.”
My lawyer tried to reassure me. “Don’t worry. The evidence is rock solid. She’s not walking away from this.”
“We’ve got purchase records, text messages, her internet search history–it all points to premeditation.”
“Trust the system. Justice will be served.”
Sure enough, the DA filed charges pretty quickly.
The evidence was airtight, the facts crystal clear.
Seraphina’s purchase records showed she’d bought concentrated sulfuric acid a full month before homecoming.
Text messages revealed she’d told multiple friends she was planning to “teach that bitch a lesson.”
Several witnesses testified that she knew exactly what was in that bottle.
One classmate even swore that Seraphina had said, “I’m gonna wreck Aurelia’s face so bad, Alistair won’t want anything to do with her.”
The day before the trial, Alistair came to see me.
He’d lost a ton of weight and looked like absolute hell.
Dark circles under his eyes like someone had punched him, stubble everywhere, clothes all wrinkled and messy.
“Aurelia, I wanted you to know I’m testifying against her.”
He stood in the doorway, like he was afraid to actually come into the room.
“I’m gonna tell them everything–how she manipulated me, how she tried to turn us against each other.”

Chapter 10
That surprised me.
After all, he’d spent months defending her.
He let out this bitter laugh. “I know you hate me. You should hate me. My stupidity is what got you hurt.”
“But at least let me do one thing right.”
“Let me be the one to put her behind bars.”
I was quiet for a minute. “Aren’t you worried Seraphina’s gonna hate you for this?”
“So what if she does?” He laughed, but there was no humor in it. “I finally figured out she never actually liked me anyway.”
“She just wanted to destroy you.”
“And I was her weapon.”
This realization was way too late.
If he’d figured out what Seraphina really was even a few months earlier…
But there are no do–overs.
