Chapter 1
After Harvard’s homecoming gala, I made a horrifying discovery: the water my childhood sweetheart, Alistair Hawke, gave me was laced with acid.
I managed to ask him why through the searing pain.
He just shrugged with that easy smile of his. “Oh, Seraphina’s idea. Come on, just a funny joke, Don’t overreact.”
“Just head over to the campus health center and wash it off. You’ll be fine.”
Seraphina Blackwood–the campus beauty who’d been chasing after Alistair relentlessly.
I stood there in stunned silence.
So that’s all my face meant to them. Something disposable. Something they could destroy for a laugh.
I didn’t say another word. I just pressed my hands to my burning face as the ambulance sirens pierced the night air, carrying me toward the hospital.
That’s when Alistair’s expression shifted.
“What the hell? I told you to go to the health center. Why’d you call an ambulance?”
I could barely manage a whisper. “Yeah.”
By the time I realized something was wrong with the water, my face was already burning.
At first it was just a sting–like hot coffee splashing on my skin. I instinctively reached up to wipe it away.
Then the real pain hit. I screamed and hit the ground hard.
The homecoming fireworks were still going off overhead, their bright colors lighting up the terrified faces of students crowding around me.
Someone was shouting: “Call 911! It’s acid!”
Alistair just stood there, frozen, still holding the water bottle he’d handed me.
“No way… Seraphina said it was just hot sauce and water for a stupid prank…”
He was muttering to himself, his voice shaky with panic–but I didn’t hear the anger I was desperately hoping for.
Then he dropped down next to me, his hands hovering uselessly as he tried to help me up.
“Aurelia, come on, don’t freak me out like this. Let’s get you to the health center, okay?”
I couldn’t get any words out.
The pain was tearing through my whole body. I could feel my skin melting away, piece by piece. It was like someone dragging a red–hot poker across my face, over and over.
Students came running with water bottles, dumping them on my face. Every single drop felt like broken glass cutting into me.
I wanted to push them all away, to scream at them to stop touching me, but I couldn’t even lift my arms.
The paramedics got there fast and immediately began treating my injuries.
“Concentrated sulfuric acid burns. This is bad. We gotta move her now!”

Chapter 1
As they lifted me onto the stretcher, through my tears and the blur of pain, I caught sight of Seraphina standing in the crowd.
There she was in her perfect white dress, looking like some kind of princess, with this tiny smile on her face.
I’ll never forget that smile as long as I live.
Our eyes met for just a second.
She mouthed the words without making a sound: “Aurelia Nightshade, Serves you right.”
Then she grabbed her friend’s arm, acting like absolutely nothing had happened, and just walked away.
