Chapter 24
“You love it, don’t you?” Sloan’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Playing with someone’s heart is fun for you, isn’t it?”
Wyatt felt a sharp pain shoot through his chest. She still wouldn’t forgive him.
Even now, after everything, she still thought he was joking.
Suddenly, a flood of memories rushed through his mind–countless moments when he’d left Sloan behind for Carol. Back when Sloan would cry and beg him not to go, he’d always tell her to stop being so dramatic and behave herself.
Whatever he did to her, turned to him like a boomerang.
Only now did he understand how painful it was to see someone look straight through you and respond with empty, dismissive words.
A bitter smile tugged at his lips as he whispered weakly, “I’m serious. If you don’t believe me, I’ll cut open my chest and show you my heart.”
Sloan picked up her purse from the table. “I’m not interested.”
Seeing her turn to leave, Wyatt panicked. Henry had been coming down hard on him lately. If he let Sloan walk away now, he wasn’t sure when he’d get another chance.
He knew Sloan and Tristan weren’t married yet. That meant there was still hope–no matter how slim–of winning her back.
Desperate, Wyatt snatched a huge gift box from his assistant’s hands and stumbled toward her. He carefully peeled back a corner of the wrapping paper, double–checking the contents before holding it out to her.
His voice trembled. “Sloan… you always loved rubies, didn’t you? I searched the world to find the biggest, most beautiful ruby just for you. You once said you’d wear it as my wife. You promised me you’d never leave me, remember?”
Sloan’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the ruby.
For a moment, she heard echoes of their younger selves.
“Sloan, are you cold? Look, I bought stuffed baked potatoes. Eat up, you must be starving after class.”
“To hell with them. They’re just jealous because you’re my girlfriend. Come here, give me a
kiss!”
“I wish time could stop right now. That way, I’d be the happiest guy in the world. When I find the most perfect ruby in the world, I’ll propose to you with it. You better not fall for anyone else before then!”
Those promises faded as quickly as they came.
Her gaze hardened. “But you broke that promise, remember? We’re done.”
“I know I messed up, Sloan,” Wyatt’s hands tightened around the box. “But everyone makes mistakes–why can’t you give me one more chance? Please, Sloan–I love you! I can’t live

Sloan’s expression didn’t change. “You knew I hate a cheater and I hate people touching my stuff, but you let your mistress wear my clothes and even sleep in our bed. And you call that love?”
“And when I was pregnant, sick in a hospital bed, you were sleeping with her every night. That’s love?”
Wyatt’s face turned deathly pale.
There was nothing he could say. Every word was true. He had done those things.
He had destroyed her trust.
“You can punish me however you want,” Wyatt’s voice cracked, “just don’t leave me.”
“I don’t think my broken heart is fit to carry your true love, Mr. Finley,” Sloan said, setting the box on the desk. “And I don’t think this company suits me anymore. You won’t be seeing me again, I’ll hand in my resignation tomorrow.”
Wyatt’s chest tightened as he watched her walk away. He wanted to reach out and stop her -but he knew better. If he pushed her now, she might disappear from his life forever.
Wyatt stood there, frozen, as the sound of her heels faded down the hall.
A wave of pain rose through his chest. Then he tasted blood in his throat. He coughed it out and collapsed to the floor.
