Chapter 23
After wrapping up things with Brielle, Sloan quickly settled into a new job at a fashion
company.
Even though it was a women’s clothing brand, her direct supervisor was a man.
Under the pretense of discussing work, he invited Sloan to meet him at a café over the
weekend.
Wyatt had just wrapped up a stressful night dealing with company issues after Henry chewed him out. Hoping to relax, he headed to a friend’s café–only to spot Sloan sitting across from a man.
Before Wyatt could even greet her, he saw the man reach out and touch Sloan’s face.
Without hesitation, Sloan threw a cup of coffee in his face.
“Are you insane?!” the man shouted, wiping the dripping coffee off his face. “If you weren’t so pretty, I wouldn’t have even considered promoting you. But with that attitude, you’ll never make it. You should be grateful I’m even considering you!”
The man, overweight and sweating, spat on the ground and raised his hand, ready to slap her.
“Get the hell away from her!” Wyatt stormed over and kicked the guy hard. “A creep like you, doesn’t deserve to touch my Sloan.”
The man, realizing he was no match for Wyatt, scowled and hissed, “You’ll regret this!” before stumbling away in disgrace.
Wyatt turned to Sloan, his eyes filled with concern. “Are you okay?”
Sloan stared at him, her expression darkening. Lately, it seemed like Wyatt kept showing up wherever she went, like he was tracking her every move.
“Are you stalking me?” Her gaze sharpened.
“I’m not. I swear it’s just a coincidence.” Wyatt’s face twisted into a bitter smile.
Sloan didn’t want to hear another word. She grabbed her purse and walked toward the exit without looking back.
“Sloan, wait! You have to believe me–I’m not stalking you!” Wyatt hurried after her, but he didn’t dare to touch her arm. He followed closely, his voice urgent.
“Sloan, I’ve been having dreams about us getting back together. Maybe it’s fate trying to bring us back.”
Sloan’s patience snapped. Her ears buzzed from the sound of his voice. Why was he doing this now? She had already stepped aside, let him be with Carol. So why was he suddenly chasing her again?
Did he think she was easy to manipulate? That a few sweet words would have her running back into his arms?
How ridiculous.

She hailed a cab and jumped right in–left him standing there, looking lost.

The next day, Sloan received shocking news–the company had been bought out. After years of being out of the workforce, with a long gap on her résumé, she had no choice but to start fresh at a small company and work her way back up.
She was sitting at her desk, quietly thrilled that her insufferable boss had just been fired, when the new owner, Wyatt, walked in.
Sloan’s expression immediately darkened.
In front of everyone, Wyatt strode confidently toward her, his tailored suit fitting him perfectly.
“Sloan, I can’t stop thinking about you. Feelings can be rebuilt, you know. For the sake of our daughter, please… give me another chance.”
Then he got down on one knee and pulled out a small box. Inside was a dazzling diamond ring, its brilliance catching the light and casting sparkling patterns on the floor.
Her coworkers gasped, their eyes wide with disbelief.
“Oh my god, that ring is massive!” one whispered.
“That diamond is massive! You can tell how much a man loves you by how much he’s willing to spend,” one woman said, practically swooning.
“This is like one of those stories from the romance novel. I can’t believe I’m witnessing it in real life. You’re so lucky!” another gushed.
The office buzzed with excitement–some of it genuine, some clearly fueled by envy and curiosity.
