- 6.
In the end, the old house my grandpa left me
was still scheduled for demolition.
I stood outside it, crying my heart out,
begging the workers not to tear it down.
I remembered what Grandpa told me just
before he died: “This house is for you and
Ethan. Grandpa wants you to be happy
forever.”
Later, I had the whole place renovated.
I was planning for Ethan and me to move in
together.
And now, the house was about to be gone.
I collapsed to my knees, coughing up blood
again and again.
The onlookers were terrified, rushing over to
ask if I needed to go to the hospital.
Just then, Kai appeared.
He swept me into his arms, his eyes filled
with pain for me.
“I’m taking you to the hospital.”
“No, the house, I want the old house…”
I couldn’t finish my sentence before I blacked
out.
In the haze, as I was drifting off, I thought I
heard Kai’s voice: “Don’t worry, I won’t let
them touch the house your grandpa gave
you.”
When I woke up again, I was in a hospital.
The news was playing on TV: the demolition
of the old family house had been cancelled.
I was stunned.

Remembering what I’d heard before I passed
out, could it be that Kai had helped me?
But why would he help me?
