- 3.
Claire had stomach cancer; that’s why she was always coughing up blood.
Now, every step I took felt like dragging a lead weight.
I used the address from her phone and found her rented room.
This was the first time I’d been to her place since the soul swap.
Before, I couldn’t accept what had happened; I just desperately wanted to switch back.
But after finding out Ethan orchestrated the
whole thing, I knew switching back would be
incredibly difficult.
As I pushed open the door, I saw a man
L
dressed head–to–toe in black, sitting on the
sofa, playing a video game.
My heart skipped a beat.
This was Kai, Claire’s boyfriend with the supposed violent temper.
I’d heard rumors that he beat Claire every day, that her life with him was miserable.
“You…”
“I’ll go make you something to eat.”
Before I could finish, he stood up and went
into the kitchen.
His tall, lean figure moved around the tiny
kitchen, skillfully getting out a pot to cook
For a moment, I forgot all my sorrow, just staring at him in shock.
Could it be he didn’t have a violent temper
after all?
Soon, he came out with a bowl of noodles
topped with a fried egg.
Strangely, there were no green onions.
Only my family and Ethan knew I hated green
onions.
Could it be that Claire disliked green onions
too, so Kai didn’t add them?
“Eat it while it’s hot,” he said, picking up an
orange and starting to peel it for me beside
L
Then he fed it to me, segment by segment.
“I sold one of my paintings. I’ve rented a new place. We can move out together tomorrow.”
I didn’t say anything, just looked into his dark eyes.
They were filled with affection for me.
It seemed the rumors were false. He didn’t have a violent temper; he really loved Claire.
And Ethan… Ethan didn’t love me.
