Ethan’s words shocked me.

This sudden declaration of love felt too little,
too late, and utterly baffling.
Claire was sobbing.
“Ethan, you heartless bastard!”
“You spent five years researching soul-
swapping for me, and now you’re just going
to switch me back?!”
Ethan hesitated, then looked up. “Claire, I was
wrong about my own feelings.”
“I used to think I didn’t love Jade. But when I
found out she went overseas to study for my
sake, and how she secretly took care of my
health… I was so moved. I realized she’s the
one I’ve always loved.”

His eyes turned red as he spoke.
“Jade, once you’re back, you can cure me,
and then we’ll be together properly.”
But I wanted to tell him there was no way I
was saving him.
I hated him to my core.
Soon enough, Ethan switched us back.
Claire was back in her own body. She
collapsed to the ground, coughing up blood,
utterly broken.
I felt the familiar lightness of my own body, a
wave of relief washing over me.
Ethan rushed towards me reaching out but I

stammered.
“I just want a fresh start with you, Jade!
Please, save me! I don’t want to die!”
Seeing him so terrified of dying just made me

“You’re so scared of dying yourself, yet you
had no problem sending me to my death.”
I’d never forget the things he’d said.
Or the day of the car crash.
He’d told me, “You and Claire go to the
restaurant together. Wait for me there. After
this dinner, I’m cutting ties with her for good.”
“She’s been bothering us so much lately, and
I’m sick of it. I’ll make it absolutely clear to
her during the meal.”
Back then, I actually thought he was being
considerate, finally drawing a line with Claire.
But I never imagined that shortly after we got

in the car, we’d crash, and I’d wake up in
Claire’s body.
I was so devastated, so helpless.
Terrified I’d never get back, terrified my
parents wouldn’t know me.
All those memories were agonizing.
So, there was no way I was going to save
him.
