The two elderly folks exchanged a knowing smile. “Look at that–already protective!” they chuckled and as they left, the grandmother gave me a playful wink.
Victor looked a little embarrassed. “Sorry… I think
them you were here.”
“They didn’t say anything too weird, did they?”
one of my assistants may have told
I shook my head. The sunlight cast delicate shadows through his lashes.
Then, almost in a whisper, he said, “Alexia… today’s my birthday. Would you come to the celebration?”
I nodded.
That night on the yacht, Victor looked effortlessly stunning in a perfectly tailored suit–so handsome it was hard to look away.
I was lost in thought when, out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of someone on a nearby boat. A familiar figure–Samuel. And next to him, Nell.
My stomach tightened. I instinctively turned to avoid them, but then I heard hurried footsteps behind me.
“Ally!”
Samuel had somehow made it onto the yacht. His eyes locked onto mine, filled with a storm of emotions I couldn’t decipher.
Victor stepped in sharply, his voice edged with anger. “Who let him on the boat?”
Samuel didn’t even look at him. He stormed over and grabbed my wrist. “Ally, where the hell have you been?! Why haven’t you come home?!”
I yanked my hand free. “Mr. Stone,” I said coldly, “we’re divorced. Where I go is none of your concern anymore.”
His face went pale. “Ally, what are you saying?”
“I was furious when I signed those papers, yes–but we never finalized it. No divorce certificate, no asset division. That’s not a real divorce!”
“Come home with me. Now.”
Victor stepped between us, blocking his path. “Sorry. This is my yacht–and Samuel, dogs
aren’t allowed.”
Samuel’s face drained of color. His eyes were bloodshot. He pointed a shaking finger at Victor. “Who the hell do you think you are?! Are you the one who’s keeping my wife locked away? I swear I’ll call the police!”
Victor gave a sharp, bitter laugh. “Locked away? Do you even realize what she’s been through? Alexia was nearly assaulted–and where were you then? You’re her husband, right? So where the hell were you?”
Samuel froze.

through? Alexia was nearly assaulted and where were you then? You’re her husband right? So where the hell were you?”
Samuel froze.
“What assault? Ally, why didn’t you-”
He stopped mid–sentence. Something clicked. He remembered that phone call–the one where I sounded panicked, desperate. He had brushed it off, assuming I was just throwing
another tantrum.
Samuel looked at me, “Ally, I’m sorry. Nell had a fever that night. I thought you were just upset… I didn’t realize…”
Then his tone shifted, urgent and pleading. “Victor’s not who you think he is. You shouldn’t be around him. He’s using you to get at me–can’t you see that?”
“Enough!” I cut him off sharply. “I don’t want to see you again!”
Samuel stepped forward, but before he could say anything more, Nell’s panicked scream rang out from behind him.
“Mr. Stone! The nanny says the baby’s sick–please, we have to go!”
She ran toward me, trying to pull me along with her. In the chaos, we both lost our balance and fell into the water.
“Help! I can’t swim! Somebody help me! I don’t want to die!” Nell thrashed helplessly, gasping and crying for help.
Without a second’s hesitation, Samuel dove in and swam straight toward her.
I should have been over him by now. I really should have. But watching him swim toward someone else, his back turned to me–it still hurt. Deeply.
Then I felt strong arms pulling me out of the water.
Victor held me tightly. “Don’t be scared,” he whispered. “I’m here.”

When I woke up, Victor was sitting by my bedside, dark circles under his eyes from staying up all night.
Outside the hospital room, voices were raised.
“Move! She’s my wife! You have no right to keep me from seeing her!”
Next to Samuel stood a woman and two toddlers around a year old were wailing beside
her.
“Samuel, please… let it go,” the woman tried to reason with him.
He shoved her aside. “Get out of my way! I’m going in!”
I sat up slowly, my voice calm but firm. “Let them in. The yelling’s giving me a headache.” Samuel rushed in, his expression frantic. “Ally, are you okay?”
