That night. Tslept on my side in Reik’s bed. He lay beside me, holding me close. The moonlight was bright, streaming through a gap in the curtains. Reik held me and we watched the moon together
“That stray dog you fed,” he said, “I had someone bring it home. It’s in the yard now. If you like, you can go see it tomorrow.”
Neither of us was sleepy, so he just talked to me in a low, rambling voice, as if trying to fill the ten–year silence between us. He told me how he had raised Noah. He told me about all the candidates the System had sent to him. He told me how much he had missed me all these years
