As the thought crossed my mind, I voiced it.
“Why?”
Reik smiled. “I know why you came to my side, why you came to this world.”
He slowly enunciated the words. “You’re here… to win me over.”
My heart stopped for a beat.
Reik knew everything. It was as if this entire world was in the palm of his hand.
“Then why,” I asked, “did you choose me?”
Now that it was out in the open, there was no point in hiding anything. “The System said there have been dozens, hundreds of candidates who came to this world.”
Reik’s fingers gently caressed the back of my hand. We had stepped into an elevator. With a single look from him, the assistants, bodyguards, and doctors who had been following us silen- tiy moved to the elevator on the other side.
The doors closed, leaving just the two of us in the confined space. We were already close enough, but he took another step forward, lowered his head, and moved to kiss my eyes.
His gaze was incredibly serious, so focused that it felt like I was the only thing in his world.
The second before he reached me, I turned my head away.
It was the first time I had ever refused Reik Thorne.
