Chapter 4
The paperwork went quickly. After finishing, Sylvia took an Uber back to home.
Not long after, Edwin walked in with an apologetic look on his face, carrying a box of specialty macarons
“Sylvia, you’re going to be my wife soon. I just wanted to get along with your family that’s why I was a bit more attentive to Tiffany. Don’t take it the wrong way. You know how long I’ve been chasing after you…
You’re the only one I’ve ever had in my heart.”
Sylvia couldn’t believe how convincing an actor he was.
These macarons came from a boutique bakery across town, requiring a drive through half the city. The place was famous for its unique flavors and always had insane lines–typically a three–hour wait minimum.
His behaviour truly matched the reputation of devoted love everyone attributed to him. Except this devotion wasn’t for her–it was for Tiffany.
Sylvia was too tired to continue this charade. She shook her head, for the first time not accepting his gift.
“I’m not feeling well. Need a rest.”
She turned and went to her room before saw his reaction.
Edwin stood there stunned. He noticed her mood, of course, but didn’t think too deeply about it. He assumed she was still upset about him rushing off to help Tiffany.
To make it up to her, he cleared his entire schedule to take her on a date.
He arranged a candlelit dinner, accompanied her shopping for luxury items, and finally took her to see a movie.
They had just settled into their chosen seats before several young women entered the theater–Tiffany at the center of the group!
Though Edwin’s expression remained neutral, Sylvia clearly noticed how his attention immediately scattered.
His eyes kept drifting toward Tiffany sitting nearby.
The movie was halfway through, but watching Edwin’s distracted expression, Sylvia could tell he hadn’t registered a single scene.
Finally, she called his name, snapping him back to reality.
“What is it, Sylvia?”
“I’m not feeling great. Let’s head home,” she said quietly, her voice deliberately flat as if she truly wasn’t feeling well. He glanced longingly at Tiffany one more time, but eventually stood up to leave with Sylvia.
They had barely exited the theater when chaos erupted behind them. A wave of panicked moviegoers rushed toward the exits, their voices rising in
alarm.
“Fire! Theater’s on fire!“.
When Edwin realized what was happening, the color drained from his face. He was about to push against the crowd when he spotted Tiffany’s friends rushing out among the evacuees.
He frantically intercepted them, questioning each one with barely controlled panic: “Where’s Tiffany?!”
Hearing his demand, the girls looked at each other helplessly, no one able to give him an answer. After a moment of horrified realization, they stammered, “Tiffany… I think… I think she’s still inside…”
At these words, rage instantly consumed him, burning away all rationality. He shouted, “Weren’t you supposed to be looking after her?!”
Without waiting for a response, he turned to charge into the burning theater.
He hadn’t made it far when his driver grabbed him. “Sir, the fire’s too intense! You can’t go in there. The firefighters are on their way…”
