Chapter 24 Done Being a Doormat
Colten averted his gaze and asked, “What’s going on?”
Mentioning this, Neil’s tone turned impatient. “It’s all that brat’s fault. I’ve never liked him.”
A group of people started heading out the door.
Mayra could tell that the people surrounding Ronan were all from the top echelons of society.
But the people with Colten? They were heirs from the most powerful families, at the very heart of the elite circle.
They were bold, audacious, well–mannered, yet still so untouchable.
She sighed lightly and went to return her clothes to Gracie.
Gracie asked, “Maya, do you really not care about Ronan anymore?”
Mayra changed into her own clothes, nodded, and said, “I’ve figured it out. I don’t want to be anyone’s doormat anymore.”
Gracie’s eyes darkened with a hint of complexity as she folded her work clothes and asked, “So, you’re going to the Morton Group. You’re really going there for Colten?”
Mayra chuckled lightly, “How could I? When I first lost my memory, I honestly thought Colten might be someone important to me. But now, I realize he’s pretty distant. I just want to do my job well and stop chasing after some guy.”
Gracie let out a breath of relief and smiled at her. “I’m glad you’ve figured

it out.”

Mayra, now financially stable, transferred her 2 thousand dollars back to Gracie. “Here’s your money. I’m leaving now. I have to find a new place to live. The current one’s in a bad neighborhood.”
Gracie nodded. “Take care, and don’t do anything like tonight again. Neil’s not someone easy to get along with.”
Mayra raised an eyebrow, surprised. “You know him?”
Gracie looked uncomfortable, quickly averting her eyes. “I’ve worked here for three years. I know anyone who’s a regular around here.”
Mayra didn’t press it further and waved goodbye.
The next day, she went to the Morton Group. She had barely settled at her desk when a woman approached, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
“Some people should realize that if they’re here to chase men, they’re better off not coming. Using lowly tricks to take someone else’s spot? Watch out for when it all backfires.”
Mayra glanced at the woman, who was Haleigh Cobb, the department
manager.
Yesterday, Mayra hadn’t come to the office because she’d been sick, but she’d still sent in a leave request as soon as she woke up.
Haleigh crossed her arms and said, “Mayra, you didn’t hand in that stack of data you were supposed to organize yesterday. It delayed the entire department’s progress. How about you treat everyone to afternoon tea today? Let us know in the chat group what you’d like to order.”
The other colleagues immediately chimed in, “Thanks, Haleigh.”
“I want coffee.”

Haleigh smirked. She had a sharp, efficient look to her, but from the first day Mayra joined, she had made her dislike clear.
“Mayra, that’s one cup of coffee for everyone. No complaints, right?”
Mayra sat at her desk. It was only her second day, and while she had been sick and absent, she was willing to accept the “penalty.”
“No complaints, but shouldn’t I be added to the workgroup first?”
A few colleagues nearby looked awkward, as no one had added Mayra as a friend yet.
Someone quickly invited her to the group chat.
The group chat was for the department’s work, and even Ronan was in there.
People began posting their drink orders, and Mayra placed her order through delivery.
Just as she finished, Ronan stepped out of his office and paused for a moment as he passed by Mayra.
Mayra kept her head down, busying herself with her work, clearly uninterested in engaging with him.
Ronan leaned in and said, “Don’t you have anything to say? I’m available tonight. How about dinner?”
Since Mayra hadn’t shown up at the Oliver family last night, he was in a good mood. Since he had nothing better to do tonight, he figured he’d entertain himself with her.
Mayra’s face immediately darkened. “I was sick last night. We can reschedule another time.”

Ronan snorted derisively, “Don’t you think your lie isn’t convincing? What kind of illness lets you show up and party at Moonlight Club the very next night? Your family called you so many times, and you didn’t answer.”

“Don’t fool yourself,” he thought. “She obviously didn’t want to call off the engagement.”
Mayra couldn’t be bothered to explain. She was done talking.
Ronan knocked on her desk and, in a condescending tone, asked, “I’m asking you a question. Are you coming out tonight or not?”
“Go to hell!” Mayra snapped.
“Keep pretending. I never knew you could fake it so well,” Ronan said.
