Chapter 20 She Got a Fever
Mayra had been applying her face mask for half an hour when she heard. him say, “It’s getting late.”
The unspoken message was, “You can leave now.”
Mayra sat motionless on the couch, still a little shaken. At least here, she
felt safe.
Though she feared Colten, it was still better than going back to face an unknown danger.
Jordon had bought into everything Viviana said. Next, she’d probably use even more underhanded methods.
Mayra placed the ice pack on the coffee table and said, “Can I stay here tonight? I’ll sleep on the couch in the living room. I won’t disturb you, Mr. Colten.”
Colten had already turned toward the master bedroom, but Mayra, understanding, quickly moved behind his wheelchair to push it for him.
Even though she knew he didn’t need it, Mayra had to swallow her pride and act humble since she needed his help.
Reaching the master bedroom, she added, “I don’t snore. I’ll just manage for one night on the couch.”
“Do as you please,” Colten said.
At his consent, her face instantly lit up with a smile. “Great. Thank you. again, Mr. Colten.”
Colten didn’t even glance at her. He propped himself up with one hand on the bed and slowly stood.
Suddenly, Mayra remembered what Jared had said. Colten was
undergoing rehabilitation. She wondered if she had disturbed his therapy.
Mayra hurried over and placed her hand on his.
Colten carried a subtle fragrance, something like the fresh scent of pine in
winter.
He sat on the bed, slowly bringing his legs up.
Despite the slow movements, there was no sign of clumsiness. It almost looked graceful.
Standing by the bed, Mayra thought, “Gracie was right. Even if his legs. were permanently damaged, there would still be plenty of women pining for him. But was it really because of me that the accident happened, and his legs were ruined?”
Mayra didn’t dare ask, afraid of hitting a nerve.
She was already at the door when she politely asked, “Mr. Colten, will you be needing the lights off soon?”
“No need.”
She gently closed the door behind her.
She was truly exhausted–after the medicine, and an hour in the cold water. Fatigue hit her all at once, and she fell asleep instantly.
The next morning, Mayra didn’t wake up normally, only to feel like she was on fire.
Someone was speaking beside her, then pried her mouth open and fed her

something.
Mayra frowned at the bitter taste, wanting to spit it out, but the hand stubbornly lifted her chin, forcing her to swallow.
Colten set the bowl down and glanced at the IV bottle beside him.
“Mr. Colten, her fever’s almost at 40°C. It’ll be a while before she wakes.
The private doctor had been called in at midnight. Mayra had been feverish since 3 in the morning.
She had only just been discharged from the hospital and hadn’t eaten. properly, in no shape to fight off an illness.
A cold bath had sent her straight into a breakdown.
It wasn’t until 7 PM that Mayra finally stirred.
Her throat felt dry. She tried to sit up, but dizziness hit her, and she nearly passed out.
Colten furrowed his brow and handed her a glass of water.
After drinking it all, Mayra felt like she was forgetting something.
She glanced at the clock on the wall and rushed to get up, saying, “Sorry, I have to go. Ronan’s going to the Oliver family to break off our engagement tonight.”
If she didn’t show up, with Ronan’s narcissistic tendencies, he’d probably come up with a whole bunch of scenarios.
Colten watched her stagger away, letting out a scoff and placing the cup. down.
“I thought you were serious this time…”
“What?”
Mayra was a bit foggy. She tried to open the bedroom door but suddenly felt her mind go blank.
She had no choice but to stumble back into bed. She’d been burning with a fever all day and had no strength left.
She didn’t even have time to say another word before drifting back to sleep
Colten sat silently beside her, his expression growing colder.
After a long while, he finally turned his wheelchair and left the room.
Meanwhile, Ronan had indeed gone to the Oliver family.
When the Oliver family heard that Mayra had taken the initiative to call off the engagement, smiles spread across their faces.
Shaun immediately congratulated Viviana. “Viviana, congratulations! It looks like you and Ronan are meant to be. Once Mayra’s engagement is officially annulled, will you two be getting married right away?”
A faint blush appeared on Viviana’s face, but inwardly, she seethed with malice as she thought, “Tonight, Mayra probably won’t show up. After all, Jordon has already made his move. Maybe in a few hours, Mayra’s embarrassing photos will be all over town. Then, everyone would turn against her, and even that one person would likely lose all hope for her.”
A sly smile curved Viviana’s lips, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
“The time’s almost up. She should be on her way now.”
Ronan, seated nearby, snorted. He didn’t believe for a second that Mayra would actually show up.
