“Ms. Shaw,” he said gently, “I’m sure you’re aware of this yourself, but given the Cannon family’s influence, an amicable divorce is
nearly impossible.”
Of course I knew. Which is why I was prepared to give up everything. “What if I don’t ask for any assets? I’ll walk away with nothing.”
The lawyer looked slightly more optimistic, but still hesitant. “And does Mr. Cannon also wish to divorce?”
I shook my head, the color draining from my face. This wasn’t my first attempt to leave him. Five years ago, he’d locked me in the
villa. Three years ago, he’d taken my son away. For seven years, George had known my weaknesses perfectly, using them to keep
me trapped.
This was the third time.
Perhaps out of pity, the lawyer agreed to take my case. But when I handed him my marriage certificate, his eyes widened.
“Ms. Shaw… this certificate… it’s a forgery.”
He pushed his glasses up his nose. “You and Mr. Cannon were never legally married.”

“What?”
I shot to my feet, convinced I had misheard. “How can it be fake? Look again, please!”
The lawyer examined it carefully once more. “I’m very sorry, Ms. Shaw, but this is definitively a counterfeit document.”
“Hah.” A laugh escaped my lips, but it was followed by a stream of tears I couldn’t control.

Seven years. Two thousand five hundred and fifty–five days. Every single one of them, Lhad asked myself the same questions hund-
reds of time.
Why did I believe him? Why did I agree to marry him? Why did I walk into the cold, loveless, soul–crushing prison of the Cannon fam-
ily?
It took me seven years to see the truth, six years to build the courage to leave. And now, a lawyer was telling We were never married at all.
